Barnegat Light and Environs

Harlequins & other sea ducks; plus, loons and gannets. We'll visit some nearby bayside spots after birding the inlet for additional species. Early winter birding for Harlequin Ducks, eiders, and scoters. In some years seabird migration is still underway, and we may also see many gulls, loons and gannets. The beaches may host Horned Larks, Am. Pipits, and/or Snow Buntings. After birding the lighthouse/inlet area, we'll caravan to nearby bayside spots for more species. Walk through old farm fields to discover overwintering field birds and hike along the ridge for great views and more birds. Becker Farm dates back to 1880 when it was a farm. Over the years this farm added its famous railroad which entertained families for over 30 years. Forsythe (Brigantine) NWR

Winter brings Tundra Swans and many other species of waterfowl at this great refuge. We’ll also search for raptors including Northern Harrier, Red-shouldered Hawk, and Bald Eagles. Some wintering songbirds may also be present. Bring binoculars, spotting scope if you have one, and dress warmly. This trip requires minimal walking and follows an eight-mile auto loop. North Shore Ponds & Inlets

Point Pleasant - Broadway Public Parking lot 3 Broadway, Point Pleasant Beach, NJ, United States

The "north shore" between Point Pleasant Beach and Belmar can make for great winter birding. We'll search the inlets, ponds, and oceanfront for a variety of ducks, loons, gulls, and more. In some years Razorbills or other rarer alcids may be present, and the tour can be good for "white-winged" gulls. Meet at the east end of Broadway in Point Pleasant Beach. Bring binoculars, spotting scope if you have one, and lunch. Dress warmly. This trip requires little walking. Led by Scott Barnes and Linda Mack. Troy Meadows Birding Walk

Search the edges of the swamp for wintering birds. Be prepared for muddy or icy conditions. We will carpool to the trail head. Troy Meadows in Parsippany/East Hanover is an excellent place to encounter wintering birds of prey, marsh birds, and woodland species. Footing can be wet. Winter birding for geese, ducks, and gulls around the lake. Easy walking trails and relaxed pace. Visit an Essex County oasis while searching for wintering ducks, gulls and passerine birds. All can be viewed along an easy trail around the lake. Enter at Meeker and Empire Streets, then bear left and continue to the large parking area on the south side of the lake. Mannington Marsh and Environs

March brings a good mix of waterfowl, herons, egrets, some shorebirds & early songbirds to this productive and rural part of NJ. Mannington Marsh can hold a good variety of ducks, herons, and egrets, plus shorebirds. There are usually plenty of Bald Eagles around and a resident pair of Sandhill Cranes. Early spring migrants like swallows, kinglets, and sparrows may be present. We’ll also visit other nearby areas including Featherbed Lane.  Led by Scott Barnes, Linda Mack, and associate naturalists.
