Spring Migration Bird Walks
Lorrimer Sanctuary 790 Ewing Avenue, Franklin Lakes, NJ, United StatesGrab your binoculars, it's spring migration! As the days warm, join us for a morning walk as we search for migrating birds like warblers! Learn how to identify and listen for bird species of all kinds during this hour-long birding program. From March-May, we'll walk the trails at Lorrimer Sanctuary looking for birds of all kinds including beautiful migratory warbler species that will only stopover in NJ for a short time on their way north. This program is open to all birders, from beginner to experienced! Dress appropriately for the weather! We will be outdoors the entire time. COST: $8 members / $10 nonmembers IMPORTANT INFORMATION: Dress for the weather. This program is entirely outdoors. Island Beach State Park
Island Beach State Park - Park Entrance Median Parking Lot Central Ave, Seaside Park, NJ, United StatesSearch maritime forest for migrant vireos, tanagers, and warblers. We’ll also spend time checking out waterbirds in the marshes. Spring birding at one the state’s most beautiful parks. We’ll look for migrant songbirds and survey bayside wetlands for a variety of waterbirds including herons, ibis, and terns. There is a $5 entry fee to the park if you don’t have a state park pass, vax pass, or are less than 62 years old. Be prepared for a good amount of walking over flat and sandy terrain. Led by Scott Barnes and Associate Naturalists. A NOTE ON MEETING LOCATION! We'll meet just outside of the park entrance, in the median parking lot at the end of Rt. 35. NJ Audubon: Bearfort Waters & Mossman’s Brook Trail Bird Walk
Bearfort Waters Clinton Road, Hewitt, NJ, United StatesJoin Associate Naturalist Dave Oster to bird around Bearfort Waters and the trail along Mossman's Brook. We will bird around Bearfort Waters itself then follow the trail along Mossman's Brook. The area is rich in nesting species and the amount of bird song is impressive. This past spring we had Red-shouldered Hawk, 2 Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, Acadian and Least Flycatcher, lots of thrushes including 2 Hermit, and 11 warblers including Redstart, Ovenbird, 4 Worm-eating, 5 Hooded, 4 Cerulean, Blackburnian, and Pine Warblers. Sturdy footwear recommended as the trail is level to rolling but rocky in places. Often very buggy. Please bring your own binoculars, and spotting scope if desired. There will be no equipment available to borrow. Ticket sales end on 5/27/2022 at 4:00 PM. Registration required. Walk-ins will not be permitted to participate. COST: $15 members, $20 nonmembers. Old Mine Rd/Delaware Water Gap
Kittatinny Point Visitor Center 1 Interstate 80, Columbia, NJ, United StatesA perennial favorite for many breeding warblers and other songbirds in a beautiful setting during the height of the nesting season. Great roadside birding along the scenic upper Delaware River, with a wide variety of breeding songbirds, including Black-billed Cuckoo, Alder Flycatcher, Louisiana Waterthrush, Worm-eating, Hooded, & Cerulean Warblers. Led by Scott Barnes and Linda Mack. Location: Meet at the Kittatinny Point Visitor Center. Join us for a relaxed morning of birding whether you are a seasoned birder or have never really watched birds on purpose before PREREGISTRATION REQUIRED COST: $6 members, $10 nonmembers. Negri-Nepote Grasslands
Negri-Nepote Native Grassland Preserve 260 Skillmans Lane, Franklin Township, NJ, United StatesWe’ll search for nesting grassland birds including Grasshopper Sparrow at this hidden gem. This restored grassland hosts a good variety of breeding species including American Kestrel, Black-billed Cuckoo, Grasshopper Sparrow, Orchard Oriole, and Blue Grosbeak. Be prepared for three hours of walking over flat terrain. We’ll also spend a little time looking at butterflies and dragonflies. There are no restrooms on site. An Evening at Forsythe (Brig) NWR
Edwin B Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge 800 Great Creek Road, Galloway, NJ, United StatesEvening birding at the refuge looking for waders, late shorebirds, and marsh birds. We’ll finish by listening for nightjars & owls. We’ll do a leisurely spin around the wildlife drive looking for late shorebirds, breeding species including Clapper Rail, herons, egrets, Seaside and Saltmarsh Sparrows and finish the trip by listening for Chuck-will’s-widow and Eastern Whip-poor-will. NJ Audubon: Old Coal Trail Birdwalk
Old Coal Trail - Clinton Rd NJ, United StatesJoin Associate Naturalist Dave Oster to bird around Old Coal Trail in West Milford. We’ll walk the Old Coal Trail and probably an additional trail that runs west and north of Bearfort Waters. These trails lead to higher elevations and dense mountain laurel thickets which should be in bloom. With a little patience it’s usually possible to get good views of nesting Black-throated Blue Warbler. This area is also excellent for Hooded Warbler and a variety of nesting thrushes, vireos, warblers etc. Broad-winged Hawk and Yellow-bellied Sapsucker are also possible. Just a beautiful area and very birdy. Some of the trail has loose rock so sturdy footwear is recommended. Please bring your own binoculars, and spotting scope if desired.
