Spring Birding at Hawk Rise Sanctuary
Hawk Rise Sanctuary 1811 Lower Rd, Linden, NJ, United StatesExplore the various habitats at Hawk Rise Sanctuary to look for spring migrants. Join NJ Audubon Program Director Scott Barnes and associate naturalists for a leisurely walk at the sanctuary. We’ll look for woodpeckers, thrushes and warblers in the woods and wetland birds like herons, egrets, and Ospreys along the Rahway River. Bring binoculars and dress for the weather. Easy walking over flat terrain. Port-a-John on site. The wide variety of habitats here ensures a good diversity of bird species from herons and egrets to shorebirds, hawks, and songbirds. Every week is different as we watch spring migration unfold. Be prepared for a fair amount of walking over flat and sometimes sandy terrain. Led by Scott Barnes, Linda Mack, Carole Hughes, and other associate naturalists. Peaslee WMA is an extension of Belleplain State Forest with special areas that attract migrant and breeding songbirds. Get to know some of the very best spots in this wonderful natural area - great for vireos, tanagers, warblers and much more! We do not set a firm daily schedule in advance, leaving us flexible to maximize birding opportunities, taking advantage of weather conditions, tides, and recent bird sightings. We'll explore the nature trail and feeding stations at our Northwood Center and enjoy lingering waterfowl and migrant songbirds along Lake Lily. Along with spotting migrant and resident species an emphasis will be placed on learning how to identify song and look for identifying field marks.
