NJ Audubon Learning the Birds by Song Series
Led by Randy Little, Associate Naturalist For beginners and those with some experience, this birding-by-ear series will improve your bird identification skills. More often than not, birds are heard before they are seen (if seen at all!) Learning their songs will add another dimension to your birdwatching. Randy Little is a former NJA board member and long-time NJA volunteer. Randy learned birding as a youngster under the wings of the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology’s founders and is a master at recording bird songs for the Cornell Lab. This series will begin Wednesday March 6 and continue every Wednesday evening until April 10. March 6 & 13 classes will cover the winter resident birds, March 20 & 27 classes will cover the early migrant birds, and April 3 & 10 classes will cover the summer resident birds. After the end of the series participants may join Randy on Saturday morning, April 13 for a free, outdoor, “practical hands-on” Learning the Birds by Song walk at the Sanctuary. Registration and fee are per class. You must pre-register for each class you wish to attend. Ticket sale for each class ends at 4:00 PM on the day of the class. Early spring birding for loons, grebes, gulls, & migrants. If winds are right, we could have a modest hawk flight. Raritan Bay Waterfront Park has long been known as a concentration point for Bonaparte's Gulls in spring. If we're lucky a Little Gull or Black-headed Gull could be among them. The bay usually hosts a variety of waterbirds in early spring and some landbird migrants could be around. Once you enter the park, go north and park at the end of the lot close to the bay. The “shoulder season” in Cape May is a wonderful time for birding and there’s no better place to do it than the Cape May Point State Park. With its diversity of habitat – beach, dunes, ponds, forest, and marsh – it’s the perfect spot for migrating waterfowl, songbirds and shorebirds to stop and refuel as the push of spring migration begins. We’ll travel the trails, check out CMBO’s Northwood Center and other surrounding hotspots on The Point, as we soak up the wonder of this annual phenomenon of Nature. NJ Audubon Raritan Bay Waterfront Park Bird Walk
Led by Dave Oster, Associate Naturalist The park is located directly on Raritan Bay and features beach, tidal flats, salt marsh, and wooded areas. A paved walking path runs along the waterfront offering unobstructed views of Raritan Bay. We’ll be looking for a variety of seabirds including Common and Red-throated Loon, Horned Grebe, Scoters and Scaup, Gannet and Bonaparte's Gull, all found on past trips. Bald Eagle, Peregrine Falcon, and Harriers are regulars. At this time of year Gannets and Horned Grebes often mass in Raritan Bay and numbers can be impressive. Over 1,000 Gannet in March 2021! Much of the trip is on level ground but prepare for wind and weather. Please bring your own binoculars, and spotting scope if desired. COST: $15 members, $20 nonmembers. Registration is required. This trip is designed to introduce young birders to a migration count, where observers conduct an organized count of migratory birds passing by a particular point. We'll watch for waterfowl, loons, gannets, gulls, and early spring songbirds. We may also spend time birding Cape May Point State Park's many habitats. Birds in Flight – Spring Edition
Join CMBO Migration Count Coordinator Tom Reed for this half day workshop, watching water and sky for northbound migrants. Cape May is synonymous with migration and birds in flight. This half-day workshop takes place at a time of year when many species are on the move and flying past the Cape May peninsula on the way to their breeding territories. Depending on the weather this may include waterfowl, wading birds, raptors, shorebirds, swallows, songbirds, and much more. Join Tom Reed, CMBO’s Migration Monitoring Coordinator and CMBO Naturalists for an afternoon of watching water and sky for northbound migrants, while learning in-flight ID tips and more about the status & distribution of spring migrants at Cape May. As an added bonus, this session will also touch on the fundamentals of bird migration counts and how they are conducted, along with an introduction to the Cape May Springwatch program. Because of the inherent dynamic nature of birding, we do not pre-set an exact itinerary but will visit those parts of Cape May County that regularly hold good numbers of birds. Final location decisions will be made by the leader based on local knowledge and conditions at the time. We may walk up to 1.5 miles, over generally level, sometimes muddy or sandy terrain. NEW 2024! The Ocean City Welcome Center has become a must-see breeding bird destination. Join our Volunteer Naturalists for great views of nesting wading birds, including Great Blue and Little Blue herons, Yellow-crowned and Black-crowned night-herons, Great and Snowy egrets, Glossy and White ibis - all building and sitting on nests. The raised parking lot of the Welcome Center provides very close views of the birds, so be sure to bring your camera to try to capture some amazing photos! The group will spend time viewing these birds from the bridge overlook, as well as taking a short walk underneath the bridge to view the birds at eye level. Our Naturalists will provide scopes for participants, but bringing your own scope is encouraged. PREREGISTRATION REQUIRED. Spring birding at one of the state's best hotspots. Expect good numbers of ducks, long-legged wading birds, plus shorebirds and songbirds. Mid-April brings many herons, egrets, and shorebirds to the refuge, as well as returning breeding species. We may also find sparrows and other songbirds along the dikes and keep our eyes out for secretive marsh birds like American Bittern and rails. Bring lunch and weather appropriate clothing. Join our Volunteer Naturalists for great views of nesting wading birds, including Great Blue and Little Blue herons, Yellow-crowned and Black-crowned night-herons, Great and Snowy egrets, Glossy and White ibis - all building and sitting on nests. The raised parking lot of the Welcome Center provides very close views of the birds, so be sure to bring your camera to try to capture some amazing photos! The group will spend time viewing these birds from the bridge overlook, as well as taking a short walk underneath the bridge to view the birds at eye level. Join CMBO Naturalists Chris Marks and Shaun Bamford to explore the birding hotspots in Atlantic County. This trip will focus on Estelle Manor Park, one of the many excellent spring birding spots in Atlantic County. It is bordered by the Great Egg Harbor River / South River to the east and by Route 50 to the west. In all, it is about 1700 acres and includes a 2-mile paved loop with viewpoints of the South River as well as several hiking paths throughout the park. Many different habitats comprise the park, which creates a diverse selection of plant and wildlife. Some sightings may include bald eagles, Eastern Bluebirds, Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, Louisiana Waterthrush, Magnolia Warbler, Prothonotary Warbler, Hooded Warbler and much more; if time allows, other nearby spots may be visited. Because of the inherent dynamic nature of birding, we do not pre-set an exact itinerary but will visit areas that regularly hold good numbers of birds. These Middlesex County hotspots provide green oases for migratory species. Warren Park (at the border of Woodbridge & Perth Amboy) has an excellent hardwood forest—complete with understory that is excellent for thrushes, vireos, and warblers; we’ll also visit the Oros Wildlife Preserve where pin oaks, brushy fields, and a large pond/wetland will complement the day’s bird list. Oros Preserve is sometimes muddy, so hiking shoes or other footwear you don’t mind getting a little dirty are best. A spotting scope is not necessary for this trip. Led by Scott Barnes and Patrick Belardo. A NOTE ON MEETING LOCATION! Some navigational devices may take you to a condo complex adjacent to the park. Take a moment to make sure you go to the right location. Once you enter the park, you will come to a T intersection. NEW 2024! The Ocean City Welcome Center has become a must-see breeding bird destination. Join our Volunteer Naturalists for great views of nesting wading birds, including Great Blue and Little Blue herons, Yellow-crowned and Black-crowned night-herons, Great and Snowy egrets, Glossy and White ibis - all building and sitting on nests. The raised parking lot of the Welcome Center provides very close views of the birds, so be sure to bring your camera to try to capture some amazing photos! The group will spend time viewing these birds from the bridge overlook, as well as taking a short walk underneath the bridge to view the birds at eye level. Garret Mountain can be a terrific spot for songbird migration in spring, and its location on the Watchung Ridge means some days there are raptors overhead as well. Please use 8 Mountain Ave, Woodland Park, NJ as a navigation address. Once you enter the park from Mountain Ave, go right (it’s a one-way road), and the meeting place/parking lot is the first lot immediately on your left.
