Fall Migrants at the Rea Farm

Rea Farm - The Beanery Bayshore Rd, West Cape May, NJ, United States

Join CMBO naturalists for this 2-hour walk around the Rea Farm "Beanery" property! NJ Audubon has leased the birding privileges on this working farm where the field edges regularly attract warblers, sparrows, and other fall migrants. It's also a great place to see migrant raptors overhead. PREREGISTRATION REQUIRED. COST: $8 members, $12 nonmembers. Interested in becoming a member? IMPORTANT INFORMATION:  We bird in all weather. Be sure to check the forecast in advance and dress in layers appropriate for prevailing weather conditions. The weather in Cape May can differ considerably from nearby inland areas and may be warmer, colder, or windier so it’s best to be over prepared. We may have to bird in the rain, so please bring your rain gear. TRANSPORTATION: We may walk up to 1.5 miles, over generally level, sometimes muddy or sandy terrain. Some trips involve walks over jetties. NEW JERSEY AUDUBON'S PROGRAM GUIDELINES: New Jersey counties are varied in their COVID-19 community transmission rates.  New Jersey Audubon highly recommends that anyone who is not fully vaccinated or who wants additional protection should consider wearing a mask and social distancing, especially indoors.  Please do not come to a program if you are sick, have a sick family member or have reason to believe you may have been exposed to the COVID-19 virus. CANCELLATION: NJ Audubon’s CMBO programs are virtually never cancelled. If we cancel, due to lack of participation, severe weather, or unforeseen circumstances, all participants will be notified as soon as possible and are eligible for a full refund. Participants may cancel without penalty if greater than 48 hours in advance. Fall birding at one of the state's best hotspots. Expect shorebirds, wading birds, marsh birds, and raptors. Early November can be an excellent time to see a variety of waterfowl, lingering shorebirds, raptors including good numbers of eagles, and late season songbird migrants. Some songbirds may be present in the woods and fields. Led by Mike Mandracchia and Hank Burk. Location: 800 Great Creek Road, Oceanville, Forsythe NWR at main lot by headquarters. The migration of scoters and other sea ducks, loons, cormorants and gannets can be an overwhelming sight.  For example, the CMBO full-time Avalon Seawatch project sighted over one million seabirds here in 2014! South Mountain Reservation Birding Meander

We will hike several trails in search of late fall migrants. Target species include both woodland passerines and ducks on the reservoir. We hope to find breeding birds around the reservoir, in hillside forests, and on meadow edges in this very large, well preserved park.  Led by Dave Hall, Associate Naturalist Location: Meet at Oakdale parking lot, across from the swan boat dock on Cherry Lane. Join Dave Oster at Raritan Bay Park for loons, grebes, ducks, and other shorebirds. We'll explore the bay, beaches, tidal flats, and marsh for a variety of waterfowl and shorebirds. We'll hope to encounter Gannets, and raptors including Bald Eagle, Peregrine, and Merlin. Led by Dave Oster, Associate Naturalist.    COST: $15 members, $20 nonmembers. Registration is required. NJ Young Birders Club-Sandy Hook

Late fall birding at "the hook" focusing on waterfowl and seabirds, as well as raptors and field birds. Waterfowl should be around in good numbers, and we’ll hope for some seabird migration along the ocean where we could find numerous scoters, loons, gannets, and gulls. Mid-November can be a good time for oddities as well, and we’ll explore the hook’s thickets and woods for late-fall land birds. Trip is open to youth ages 11-17 who are interested in birds plus parents/guardian.  Trip is free but pre-registration is required. Led by Scott Barnes and Carole Hughes. A wide variety of habitats ensure good bird diversity at one of the state’s best spots. November often includes a variety of waterfowl, raptors, and perhaps Snow Bunting or Horned Lark.
