The spring birding can be very rewarding at this freshwater wetland for lingering waterfowl and migrant shorebirds. APRIL PARKING AND MEETING LOCATION: Due to ongoing construction at the Nature Conservancy's South Cape May Meadows Parking lot, we may have to alter the parking and meeting location for the April 7, 14, 21 & 28 walks. This rich salt marsh is one of the best spots to observe hunting and breeding birds of all shapes and sizes. Our group will be scanning the crowded mudflats for Clapper Rails, American Oystercatchers, and a wide variety of migrant shorebirds. Ospreys, Black Skimmers, herons, egrets, and terns are often seen putting on a show while hunting along the island. Breeding Seaside Sparrows and wrens can also be heard from this same location! Depending on the weather, as well as the arrival and dispersal of these species, the group may also travel to Stone Harbor Point, The Wetlands Institute, and various locations in North Wildwood. PREREGISTRATION REQUIRED. MEETING LOCATION: The group will meet at the 2nd Ave parking lot at Stone Harbor Point, than travel to nearby Nummy Island. Intro to Birding
NEW 2025! Are you just getting into birding and want to learn the basics? Join CMBO’s Program Coordinator, Adehl Schwaderer and CMBO Naturalists for an afternoon of deep diving into all things birding. We will review optics, identification tips, tricks for binoculars usage, and answer any questions you may have. We’ll visit several local hotspots to take in the early spring migrants while focusing on improving your bird identification out in the field. Geared towards beginners and those wishing to improve their knowledge and appreciation of birds and birding, helping you take it to the next level! We don’t pre-set an itinerary but will visit those parts of Cape May that regularly hold good numbers of birds at this time of year. Final location decisions will be made by the leader, based on local knowledge and conditions at the time. We may walk up to 1.5 miles, over generally level, sometimes muddy or sandy terrain. A portion of the afternoon will involve an indoor session, with discussions on birdwatching and bird feeding gear/paraphernalia. This rich salt marsh is one of the best spots to observe hunting and breeding birds of all shapes and sizes. Our group will be scanning the crowded mudflats for Clapper Rails, American Oystercatchers, and a wide variety of migrant shorebirds. Ospreys, Black Skimmers, herons, egrets, and terns are often seen putting on a show while hunting along the island. Breeding Seaside Sparrows and wrens can also be heard from this same location! Depending on the weather, as well as the arrival and dispersal of these species, the group may also travel to Stone Harbor Point, The Wetlands Institute, and various locations in North Wildwood. The Ocean City Welcome Center has become a must-see breeding bird destination. Join our Volunteer Naturalists for great views of nesting wading birds, including Great Blue and Little Blue herons, Yellow-crowned and Black-crowned night-herons, Great and Snowy egrets, Glossy and White ibis - all building and sitting on nests. The raised parking lot of the Welcome Center provides very close views of the birds, so be sure to bring your camera to try to capture some amazing photos! The group will spend time viewing these birds from the bridge overlook, as well as taking a short walk underneath the bridge to view the birds at eye level. Our Naturalists will provide scopes for participants, but bringing your own scope is encouraged. PREREGISTRATION REQUIRED. This rich salt marsh is one of the best spots to observe hunting and breeding birds of all shapes and sizes. Our group will be scanning the crowded mudflats for Clapper Rails, American Oystercatchers, and a wide variety of migrant shorebirds. Ospreys, Black Skimmers, herons, egrets, and terns are often seen putting on a show while hunting along the island. Breeding Seaside Sparrows and wrens can also be heard from this same location! Depending on the weather, as well as the arrival and dispersal of these species, the group may also travel to Stone Harbor Point, The Wetlands Institute, and various locations in North Wildwood. The Ocean City Welcome Center has become a must-see breeding bird destination. Join our Volunteer Naturalists for great views of nesting wading birds, including Great Blue and Little Blue herons, Yellow-crowned and Black-crowned night-herons, Great and Snowy egrets, Glossy and White ibis - all building and sitting on nests. The raised parking lot of the Welcome Center provides very close views of the birds, so be sure to bring your camera to try to capture some amazing photos! The group will spend time viewing these birds from the bridge overlook, as well as taking a short walk underneath the bridge to view the birds at eye level. Our Naturalists will provide scopes for participants, but bringing your own scope is encouraged. PREREGISTRATION REQUIRED. We'll search for waterfowl, loons, gannets, gulls, and early spring songbirds at Cape May Point State Park's many habitats. We will introduce young birders to Cape May Spring Watch Count, where observers conduct an organized count of migratory birds passing by a particular point. Led by Migration Count Coordinator Tom Reed, and Caroline Behnke, our 2025 Cape May Bird Observatory George Meyers Naturalist, Location: Meets at the Cape May Point State Park. This rich salt marsh is one of the best spots to observe hunting and breeding birds of all shapes and sizes. Our group will be scanning the crowded mudflats for Clapper Rails, American Oystercatchers, and a wide variety of migrant shorebirds. Ospreys, Black Skimmers, herons, egrets, and terns are often seen putting on a show while hunting along the island. Breeding Seaside Sparrows and wrens can also be heard from this same location! Depending on the weather, as well as the arrival and dispersal of these species, the group may also travel to Stone Harbor Point, The Wetlands Institute, and various locations in North Wildwood. The Ocean City Welcome Center has become a must-see breeding bird destination. Join our Volunteer Naturalists for great views of nesting wading birds, including Great Blue and Little Blue herons, Yellow-crowned and Black-crowned night-herons, Great and Snowy egrets, Glossy and White ibis - all building and sitting on nests. The raised parking lot of the Welcome Center provides very close views of the birds, so be sure to bring your camera to try to capture some amazing photos! The group will spend time viewing these birds from the bridge overlook, as well as taking a short walk underneath the bridge to view the birds at eye level. Our Naturalists will provide scopes for participants, but bringing your own scope is encouraged. PREREGISTRATION REQUIRED. The Cape May Bird Observatory, with support from the Diane Cornell Wildlife Gardening Project, is excited to host Dr. Doug Tallamy to answer all the commonly asked questions about ecological landscaping. These are good, thoughtful questions about ecology and evolution, biodiversity, invasive species, insect declines, native and non-native plants, conservation and restoration, residential and city landscapes, urban issues, oak biology, keystone plants, Homegrown National Park, monarchs, supporting wildlife at home, and more. In this talk, Dr. Tallamy will address as many of these queries as he can with the hope that his answers will further motivate people to help restore ecosystem function where they live, work, play, worship, and farm. Spend the morning with Scott Whittle, bird expert, photographer, and author of The Warbler Guide, as he provides valuable insights into identifying the variety of warblers found in Cape May County each spring. During May, most of Cape May’s breeding warblers, as well as a good number of migrant species heading further north, will be in the area and this course offers an opportunity to become more familiar with a good number of them. The North American wood warblers are a remarkable group of birds, famed not so much for their song as for their dazzling plumages. However, though their songs may be relatively simple, such vocalizations can often be our first clue to locating them in the leafy forest canopy. This workshop aims to help you connect visual cues with audio cues, adding greatly to your enjoyment of these wonderful birds. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to learn how you can utilize cutting-edge conservation technology to identify and listen to these beautiful birds in your own backyard! Scott, Terra Project expert and co-founder, can guide you through this amazing new system that allows you to become part of recording spring migration. Because of the inherent dynamic nature of birding, we do not pre-set an exact itinerary but will visit those parts of Cape May Point that regularly hold good numbers of birds. What is a Little Sit? A spin on the annual, international birding event The Big Sit, this event takes that idea and slows it down. Join THE Nature Conservancy and THE Cape May Bird Observatory staff for a fun, educational challenge to see how many birds we can identify from one location. In the spring the South Cape May Meadows is the perfect location to see migrating shorebirds, warblers in breeding plumage and soaring raptors. As a part of this event, we will have benches for sitting, binoculars and spotting scopes for viewing, and educational materials to assist with bird identification. No matter your level of birding experience you are welcome to help us add to our morning species total! An ASL interpreter will be provided for this event.
