Forest Stewardship Volunteer Mondays
Forest Stewardship Volunteer Opportunity Come join us at New Jersey Audubon's Scherman Hoffman Wildlife Sanctuary to volunteer and help our staff manage our forest! Theses in-person volunteer days allow you to get hands-on experience in caring for our beautiful forests. Help maintain trails, and learn about and remove invasive species. No experience necessary - just bring your enthusiasm and willingness to help out! Don't miss this chance to make a positive impact on the environment and connect with like-minded individuals. Sign up now to secure your spot! This will be a recurring event. Please register for one or more days! Please make sure to wear long sleeves and plants , bring bug spray & sunscreen, Please wear comfortable clothes, shoes that can get muddy, and bring a water bottle. We will be using gloves, hand clippers, pruners, loppers and our hands to pull invasives. If you have a preferred set you enjoy using at home please bring them. You will be asked to fill out a volunteer form upon arrival. Please meet in our upper parking lot near the garage doors. FAQ: Do I need to stay for all 2 hours? No! We will welcome your help for as much time as you have available. Can children come? Yes, kids can definitely get involved! We will have activities like picking up sticks and light weeding that are perfect for young hands. Will you cancel in case of poor weather? If it is downpouring, thunderstorming, or there are high winds, we will cancel. Otherwise, this event will be on. Please wear warm clothing appropriate for being outdoors in cold or rain. NJ Audubon: Focus on Ferns
Scherman Hoffman Wildlife Sanctuary 11 Hardscrabble Rd, Bernardsville, NJ, United StatesLed by Dorothy Smullen, Teacher/Naturalist. Discover the fascinating life cycle and structure of ferns in this workshop led by Teacher Naturalist Dorothy Smullen. View the common species of New Jersey ferns and learn how to use a simple key to identify species. Bring a 10x magnifier if you have one; loaner magnifiers will be available to use for the workshop. Poisonous Plants – The Sinister Garden Walk
Lorrimer Sanctuary 790 Ewing Avenue, Franklin Lakes, NJ, United StatesFollowing the footprint of Lorrimer Sanctuary's past "Sinister Garden", we'll be observing and learning to recognize some of NJ's poisonous plants. From common garden weeds to well-known ornamental plants to native forest plants, this walk features something for everyone! Head out on a guided tour through our trails, where you'll encounter a variety of fascinating poisonous plants that have. Our knowledgeable staff will share anecdotes and cautionary tales about these cool (and occasionally sinister!) plants. Discover the secrets behind well-known plants like Foxglove, Bleeding Heart, and Nightshade as well as their less well-known peers! Learn about their toxic properties, historical uses, the myths and legends surrounding them, and their effects on local wildlife. This event is perfect for nature enthusiasts of all ages! Don't miss out on this unique chance to explore the darker side of the botanical world. This is not a drop-off program. Any children must be accompanied by an adult.
