Winter Sowing Workshop
Lorrimer Sanctuary 790 Ewing Avenue, Franklin Lakes, NJ, United StatesIf you've ever thought about sowing seeds for your garden over the winter but weren't sure where to start, this is the workshop for you! Did you know that many of our native plant seeds need to experience the cold to be able to germinate and bloom in the spring? Did you know you can start planting your garden in January? Join us to learn more about the process of starting your garden in winter and grow your native plant garden from seeds this season! We'll discuss our favorite native perennials and build our own winter sowing starter kit to take home out of recycled materials. Containers, native perennial seeds, and potting soil will be provided. Winter Tree ID: Buds, Bark, and Branches
Lorrimer Sanctuary 790 Ewing Avenue, Franklin Lakes, NJ, United StatesLearn how to ID native tree species in winter by looking at the 3 "B's" - buds, bark, and branches! Join a Lorrimer Sanctuary naturalist for a brief hike as we talk about the native tree species that provide food and shelter for wildlife, as well as how to ID them after their leaves have fallen. We will focus on learning to identify the 3 “B’s” – Buds, Bark, and Branches! Bundle up! This class will be held entirely outdoors. Easy Plant Propagation – NJ Audubon Dirty Hands Garden Club
New Jersey Audubon's Scherman Hoffman Wildlife Sanctuary 11 Hardscrabble Road, Bernardsville, NJ, United StatesLed by Stephanie Punnett, Program Director. Residential landscapes are becoming increasingly important for the survival of native pollinators and other wildlife and can be home for both humans and wildlife. In this workshop we’ll show you how to create a wildlife garden, and a simple way to start native plants from seed. You will make your own low-cost mini greenhouse from recycled materials and plant your choice of seeds to take home. Make a pollinator home for native bees to take home. All materials provided. Arbor Day BioBlitz at CMBO’s Northwood Center
Cape May Bird Observatory - Northwood Center 701 East Lake Drive, Cape May Point, NJ, United StatesJoin CMBO Naturalists and staff, along with local wildlife experts as we work to uncover and identify the variety of species that call our Northwood Center home! How will we be doing this? By organizing a BioBlitz! A BioBlitz is an organized effort to catalogue all living organisms in a specified location over a set period of time. Take some time out of your day to explore our Ryan DeWitt Memorial trail and participate in a few activities to celebrate Arbor Day. We encourage anyone that would like to participate in this event to stop by Northwood at any time between 8:30am to 4:00pm to help us identify as many different species as possible! Spring Seed Starting 101

Jen Sawyer from the Rutgers Cooperative Extension will be presenting on the dos and don’ts for preparing your spring garden, followed by a hand-on seed starting workshop. By the end of this free program, you will be armed with new gardening tricks and seedlings that are ready to go into your garden when the time is right! Pre-registration is required and be sure to wear something you wouldn’t mind possibly getting dirty. Native Plant Sale

We emphasize the use of New Jersey native plants, which benefit wildlife and have a strong aesthetic appeal for your landscape. Some non-natives (but non-invasive) perennials and annuals, which offer an added boost to butterfly gardens, will also be available. NJ Audubon: Spring Wildflower Walk
New Jersey Audubon's Scherman Hoffman Wildlife Sanctuary 11 Hardscrabble Road, Bernardsville, NJ, United StatesJoin Teacher Naturalist Dorothy Smullen for a stroll under the woodland canopy and open fields for spring wildflowers. Bring your favorite wildflower guidebook to check out the newly emerged blooms under the woodland canopy and open fields at Scherman Hoffman Sanctuary. Hand-outs will include vocabulary on flower structure and the “What’s in Bloom” brochures of the sanctuary. Registration required by 5/20 at 4:00 PM. One person per ticket.
