Join us twice a month to hike/walk the grounds of Scherman Hoffman with our new Center Director, Jan Hudson. This is an opportunity to share your thoughts and ideas 1:1 or in a small group setting. Share your history, involvement, and love of the Sanctuary, give input and feedback regarding the center and get your thoughts and ideas heard. Get your steps in with Jan while learning more about Scherman Hoffman’s future plans! Walk subject to cancellation due to inclement weather. Pre-registration required. These walks are informal and informative: birds, trees, tracks, wildflowers, reptiles, and amphibians are a few of nature’s wonders waiting for us to discover. The walks are cancelled if there is snow, rain, or weather warnings. Registration required by 4:00 PM the day before the walk. Pre-registration Required. COST: Free for members, $5 nonmembers. Welcome to the World Series of Birding Scherman Hoffman Big Stay Team! Come join us at New Jersey Audubon's Scherman Hoffman Wildlife Sanctuary for a fun and educational birding experience on our observation deck. Whether you're a seasoned birder or just starting out, this event is perfect for all levels of bird enthusiasts. You'll have the opportunity to learn about the World Series of Birding and the diverse bird species that call the sanctuary home. Our experienced birder, Mary, will help you spot and identify various birds while sharing interesting facts about their behaviors and habitats. The Big Stay is perfect for people that would like to participate in the World Series of Birding but aren't interested in traveling around the state or hiking. "Stay" on our deck and let the birds come to you instead of hunting for the birds! Join the team for the whole day, or just the morning shift or afternoon shift. View the common species of New Jersey ferns and learn how to use a simple key to identify species. Bring a 10x magnifier if you have one; loaner magnifiers will be available to use for the workshop. Join Sue for a guided two-mile nature hike and enjoy the trees, birds, and plant life at Scherman Hoffman Nature Sanctuary. The trails we hike will vary, but we can guarantee beautiful views of our sanctuary. Walking time is flexible but will be no longer than 2 hours. Please dress for the weather and wear sturdy shoes; be prepared to walk on uneven ground and up hills. The hike will go rain or shine. Following the footprint of Lorrimer Sanctuary's past "Sinister Garden", we'll be observing and learning to recognize some of NJ's poisonous plants. From common garden weeds to well-known ornamental plants to native forest plants, this walk features something for everyone! Head out on a guided tour through our trails, where you'll encounter a variety of fascinating poisonous plants that have. Our knowledgeable staff will share anecdotes and cautionary tales about these cool (and occasionally sinister!) plants. Discover the secrets behind well-known plants like Foxglove, Bleeding Heart, and Nightshade as well as their less well-known peers! Learn about their toxic properties, historical uses, the myths and legends surrounding them, and their effects on local wildlife. This event is perfect for nature enthusiasts of all ages!
