NJ Audubon: Saturday Winter Solstice Hike
New Jersey Audubon's Scherman Hoffman Wildlife Sanctuary 11 Hardscrabble Road, Bernardsville, NJ, United StatesLed by Sue Predl, Nature Store Assistant Celebrate the days getting longer and join Sue for a guided two-mile nature hike to enjoy the trees, birds, and plant life at Scherman Hoffman Nature Sanctuary on the shortest day of the year. The trails we hike will vary, but we can guarantee beautiful views of our sanctuary. Walking time is flexible but will be approximately 2 hours. Please dress for the winter weather and wear sturdy shoes; be prepared to walk on uneven ground and up hills. The hike will go rain or shine. We will meet at the Scherman Hoffman Nature Store at 2:00 PM. Registration required by 12/20 at 12:00 PM. COST: free for members, $5 nonmembers. Interested in becoming a member? Bundle up and join us for a family-friendly, sensory-focused nature walk! We will take a gentle stroll around the nature center trails, focusing on the sights, sounds, and textures of winter. We will identify trees, search for signs of wildlife, and collect a few natural treasures along the way. Note: We may walk up to a mile, over generally level surfaces. Some surfaces may be muddy or uneven. Please dress warmly and wear sturdy footwear. Pre-registration is required. We will read books, explore nature with hands-on sensory activities, and have fun! This program is best suited for children 18 months - 3.5 years old. We will be exploring nature hands-on; children may get wet and/or dirty. Weather permitting, we may spend a portion of this program outside. Please dress accordingly. Registration is required. An adult must accompany children. In this hands-on program, young naturalists will discover what makes mammals unique—fur, warm blood, and milk for their babies. In this program we will be: Examining real mammal skulls, pelts, and tracks to become wildlife detectives Playing active games that demonstrate how mammals hunt, hide, and survive Exploring mammal adaptations like hibernation, migration, and camouflage Searching for signs of local mammals on our nature center grounds Whether your child dreams of studying wildlife or simply loves animals, this program will spark curiosity about the mammals living right in our own backyards. Participants will leave with a deeper appreciation for these remarkable creatures and how we can help protect them. This family program is suited for children 3+ with parent supervision. Registration ends at 5 pm the day before each event! COST: Member Child (3+) $8, Non-member Child (3+) $10, Adult Chaperone FREE WHAT TO BRING: Dress for the weather as we may head outdoors.
