Spring Break Birding Bootcamp
Featured Little SproutsNature Center of Cape May 1600 Delaware Avenue, Cape May, NJ, United StatesWe may be on Spring Break, but many bird species are hard at work migrating! Do you have what it takes to be a birder? We will teach you all the foundational skills of birding- from using binoculars and spotting scopes to bird ID and more. Spend time exploring Cape May’s best birding hubs, plus enjoy classic summer camp-inspired games and activities throughout the sessions! Join us for one day or sign up for all three! SCHEDULE: April 6th: Hang out at the nature center for a morning jam-packed with summer-camp favorite activities. Learn the basics of using binoculars, play camp games, and search for shorebirds on the Cape May Harbor! April 8th: Take a field trip and explore some of Cape May’s best Spring Migration spots! Visit the Cape May Point State Park and the Cape May Springwatch to start adding new species to your “life list”. April 10th: Become a community scientist! Learn all about how you can help birds by studying them. Record the birds you spot so scientists can use your data for conservation! COST: $60 per day, $150 3-day bundle MEETING LOCATION: Nature Center of Cape May (1600 Delaware Avenue, Cape May, NJ ,08204) IMPORTANT INFORMATION: We will spend our time outside. Please send children in weather-appropriate play clothing with a water bottle and a snack. CANCELLATION POLICY: NJ Audubon’s programs require a minimum number of registrants to run. If we cancel, due to lack of participation, severe weather, or unforeseen circumstances, all participants will be notified as soon as possible and are eligible for a full refund. Participants may cancel without penalty if greater than 48 hours in advance. Youth Birders & Spring Migration: Cape May Point
FeaturedCape May Point State Park Hawkwatch Platform NJ, United StatesLed by Adehl Schwaderer and CMBO staff and naturalists Are you a youth birder who is looking to experience spring migration in Cape May? Look no further! Join NJA Staff and Volunteers as we explore the Cape May Point State Park and CMBO’s only spring migration site, Springwatch. We’ll start the trip by searching the State Park ponds for various waterfowl, raptors, and early songbird migrants. We will then visit the Springwatch Platform at the Coral Avenue dune crossing in Cape May Point. From this vantage point, we will keep an eye out for migrating loons, gannets, gulls, and terns while learning how the count is conducted from the Springwatch Team. We do not set a firm daily schedule in advance, leaving us flexible to maximize birding opportunities, taking advantage of weather conditions, tides, and recent bird sightings. We may walk up to 1.5 miles, over generally level, sometimes muddy or sandy terrain. Recommended age for field trip: 8 years old and up. Parents or guardians are required to accompany their children during this program at no additional charge. When registering, please use the youth birders name. If we do cancel, due to lack of participation, severe weather, or unforeseen circumstances, we notify all participants in advance, and all are eligible for a full credit or refund. Participants may cancel without penalty if greater than 30 days in advance. Cancellations 10 to 30 days in advance may be subject to a 25% service charge. Join NJ Audubon Staff and Volunteers to search for a variety of spring migrants that call Belleplain State Park home for the breeding season. While we are tracking down thrushes, vireos, warblers, and tanagers, the leaders will share helpful tips for how to identify these birds by sight and sound. Possible highlights include Summer Tanager, Hooded Warbler, Acadian Flycatcher, Louisiana Waterthrush, and Prothonotary Warbler. We do not set a firm daily schedule in advance, leaving us flexible to maximize birding opportunities, taking advantage of weather conditions, tides, and recent bird sightings. FeaturedGarrett Mountain Reservation - Three-Tiered Parking Lot Garrett Mountain Reservation, Woodland Park, NJ, United StatesLed by Carole Hughes & Mary Birrer Early May is peak time to see spring migration, and Garret Mountain is one of the best places to see it in NJ. We’ll focus on looking and listening for many species of vireos, thrushes, warblers, and sparrows as we walk the park’s trails and paths. Be prepared for 4 hours of leisurely walking over uneven terrain. Recommended age for field trip: 8 years old and up. Parents or guardians are required to accompany their children during this program at no additional charge. When registering, please use the youth birders name. MEETING LOCATION: Please use 8 Mountain Ave, Woodland Park, NJ as a navigation address. Once you enter the park from Mountain Ave, go right (it’s a one-way road), and the meeting place/parking lot is the first lot immediately on your left.
