Nature Explorers – Winter 2023
Lorrimer Sanctuary 790 Ewing Avenue, Franklin Lakes, NJ, United StatesLorrimer Sanctuary invites families, friends, and nature lovers to join us for an exploration of our natural world. Enjoy watching your budding naturalist ‘go wild’ experiencing woodland adventures. Children use all their senses to safely explore and discover the wonders of nature here at Lorrimer Sanctuary. Children are introduced to nature concepts using a combination of storytelling, exploration and arts and crafts. It is educational and fun! Best for families with children under 10. COST: $8 per child for members, $10 per child for nonmembers. Maple Sugaring

Tap a tree, collect sap, and taste test the syrup! Join a NJ Audubon naturalist for a fun look into the process behind making maple syrup! Learn how to identify a sugar maple tree, find out how maple sap (and eventually syrup) was discovered, collect sap, and practice tapping a tree yourself! Sunday Morning at Turkey Point
Turkey Point 914970 Turkey Point Road, Port Norris, NJ, United StatesJoin CMBO naturalists and walk New Jersey's miracle mile for an exciting array of winter birds! We’ll explore the Glades Wildlife Refuge and Dividing Creek to enjoy wintering raptors, including lots of Bald Eagles, and wintering shorebirds, gulls and ducks, including Green-winged Teal, Bufflehead, Hooded Mergansers, Common Mergansers and Bonaparte’s Gulls. NJ Audubon Binocular Basics at Hawk Rise Sanctuary

Join us at Hawk Rise Sanctuary for an introductory lesson on binocular use and function. Loaner binoculars will be provided for all. A nature walk on the sanctuary trails will follow to gain practical binocular experience. This program is appropriate for individuals of all ages. Come dressed for the weather. Nightfall at Jake’s Landing

Creative Hands Club: Alcohol Ink Painting
Nature Center of Cape May 1600 Delaware Avenue, Cape May, NJ, United StatesExperiment with a fun painting technique and learn what alcohol ink (and Sharpies) can do. Led by Creative Hands Club member and local artist Susan Tarrant, spend an evening of playful discovery creating coasters, hot pads, or light switch covers. Wearing an old shirt or apron is recommended as inks are permanent. Pre-registration is required. COST: $30 Members, $38 Non-member. Constellations and Cocoa

Visit Lorrimer Sanctuary for this after-dark program all about the stars! We'll be looking up as we learn all about the winter constellations and their myths as we sip on hot cocoa during this family-friendly program. This event will take place entirely outdoors, please dress appropriately. This event is weather dependent and will be cancelled if there is rain or cloud cover, participants will be notified of cancellations by 5:00 PM. Weequahic Park Bird Walk
Weequahic Park Meeker Avenue, Newark, NJ, United StatesWinter birding for geese, ducks, and gulls around the lake. Easy walking trails and relaxed pace. Visit an Essex County oasis while searching for wintering ducks, gulls and passerine birds. All can be viewed along an easy trail around the lake. Enter at Meeker and Empire Streets, then bear left and continue to the large parking area on the south side of the lake. NJ Audubon Learning the Birds by Song Series
New Jersey Audubon's Scherman Hoffman Wildlife Sanctuary 11 Hardscrabble Road, Bernardsville, NJ, United StatesLed by Randy Little, Associate Naturalist For beginners and those with some experience, this birding-by-song series will improve your bird identification skills. More often than not, birds are heard before they are seen (if seen at all!) Learning their songs will add another dimension to your birdwatching. Randy Little is a former NJA board member and long-time NJA volunteer. Randy learned birding as a youngster under the wings of the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology’s founders and is a master at recording bird songs for the Cornell Lab. This series will begin Thursday March 2 and continue every Thursday evening until April 6. March 2 & 9 classes will cover the winter resident birds, March 16 & 23 classes will cover the early migrant birds, and March 30 & April 6 classes will cover the summer resident birds. After the end of the series participants may join Randy for a free, outdoor, “practical hands-on” Learning the Birds by Song walk at the Sanctuary. COST PER CLASS: $10 members, $15 nonmembers.
