The Rea Farm was hopping with birds this morning. SO.MANY.SPARROWS! Cornell’s BirdCast said 1.6 million birds migrated over Cape May last night and it sure seemed like it on the ground. Song, White-throated and Swamp Sparrows are present in large numbers and there were also Savannah and Field Sparrows in the mix. We had good views of a Clay-colored Sparrow, and a few Palm Warblers fed in the grassy field edges. We saw a couple of Purple Finches and a single Rusty Blackbird. A male Black-throated Blue Warbler was a nice surprise but the Orange-crowned Warbler that fed for several minutes close in the goldenrod was, perhaps, the highlight of a beautiful morning.
