Raritan Bay Waterfront Park
Raritan Bay Waterfront Park 201 John T O'Leary Boulevard, South Amboy, NJ, United StatesFall birding for waterbirds at this productive park. We'll look for waterfowl, loons, grebes, gulls, and raptors along the shores of the bay. Raritan Bay Waterfront Park lies at the western end of Raritan Bay near the mouths of the Raritan River and the Arthur Kill. The bay usually hosts a variety of waterbirds from fall through spring. Species we may see include Common and Red-throated Loons, Horned Grebe, a variety of diving ducks, several species of gulls, and raptors. Once you enter the park, go north and park at the end of the lot close to the bay. Be prepared for easy walking for 3 hours. Restrooms on site. Led by Patrick Belardo and Jason Denesevich. NJ Audubon Raritan Bay Waterfront Park Bird Walk
Raritan Bay Waterfront Park 201 John T O'Leary Boulevard, South Amboy, NJ, United StatesLed by Dave Oster, Associate Naturalist The park is located directly on Raritan Bay and features beach, tidal flats, salt marsh, and wooded areas. A paved walking path runs along the waterfront offering unobstructed views of Raritan Bay. We’ll be looking for a variety of seabirds including Common and Red-throated Loon, Horned Grebe, Scoters and Scaup, Gannet and Bonaparte's Gull, all found on past trips. Bald Eagle, Peregrine Falcon, and Harriers are regulars. At this time of year Gannets and Horned Grebes often mass in Raritan Bay and numbers can be impressive. Over 1,000 Gannet in March 2021! Much of the trip is on level ground but prepare for wind and weather. Please bring your own binoculars, and spotting scope if desired.   COST: $15 members, $20 nonmembers. Registration is required. Walk-ins will not be permitted to participate. Ticket sales end on 04/05/2024 at 4:00 PM. Interested in becoming a member? If we cancel, due to lack of participation, severe weather, or unforeseen circumstances, all participants will be notified as soon as possible and are eligible for a full refund. If winds are right, we could have a modest hawk flight. Raritan Bay Waterfront Park has long been known as a concentration point for Bonaparte's Gulls in spring. If we're lucky a Little Gull or Black-headed Gull could be among them. The bay usually hosts a variety of waterbirds in early spring and some landbird migrants could be around. Once you enter the park, go north and park at the end of the lot close to the bay. Be prepared for easy walking for 3 hours. Restrooms on site. Led by Scott Barnes and Hank Burk.
