Early fall birding at the hook: we may encounter anything from shorebirds and terns to flycatchers, sparrows, and warblers. A wide variety of habitats ensure good bird diversity at one of the state’s best spots. Be prepared for 3-4 hours of walking over flat and sandy surfaces. An afternoon learning about waterbird migration at the east coast’s only full-time seawatch! Youth birders 8 years old and up are encouraged to join NJA Staff and Volunteers to witness sea ducks, loons, gannets, gulls, and more migrants south from CMBO’s Avalon Seawatch. Each fall, an average of almost 800,000 seabirds are counted at the Avalon Seawatch, with some years reaching a season total of over one million migrating birds. During this three-hour program, the group will spend time at the Seawatch identifying migrating seabirds, discussing the five most common species observed from the count, and learning how this migration watch is conducted! Recommended age for field trip: 8 years old and up. Parents or guardians are required to accompany their children during this program at no additional charge. Fall birding for waterbirds at this productive park. We'll look for waterfowl, loons, grebes, gulls, and raptors along the shores of the bay. Raritan Bay Waterfront Park lies at the western end of Raritan Bay near the mouths of the Raritan River and the Arthur Kill. The bay usually hosts a variety of waterbirds from fall through spring. Species we may see include Common and Red-throated Loons, Horned Grebe, a variety of diving ducks, several species of gulls, and raptors. Once you enter the park, go north and park at the end of the lot close to the bay. Be prepared for easy walking for 3 hours. Restrooms on site. Led by Patrick Belardo. The Fall migration of seabirds along the South Jersey coast is fascinating, inspiring, and sometimes overwhelming, as hundreds of thousands head south to wintering grounds. Join us for an afternoon of scoters, gannets, loons, grebes, cormorants, jaegers, and more – a chance to learn about and appreciate these amazing movements. We’ll discuss plumage, flight style, seasonality and other aspects that affect migration. We’ll concentrate our efforts around Stone Harbor and Avalon – taking it all in. Mid-November is one of the best times to look for vagrants. Join Adehl Schwaderer, Kathy & Roger Horn, Karen Thompson and CMBO naturalists in rounding up these rarities! Cape May is well known for the sheer number of birds that migrate through each fall, but did you know it’s also a great place for unexpected species to be spotted? Mid-November is one of the best times to look for vagrants: landbird migration is still ongoing, and rarities often show up and stick around for days or even weeks. We might seek “stake-out” birds (birds previously found and staying in the same area) and search local hotspots to try to track down our own out of place birds! Late fall has featured many irruptive landbirds and we’ll seek these out as they remain available. Join us on this Special Field Trip as we try to round up as many unexpected birds as possible around the tip of the Cape May peninsula. Forsythe NWR is one of the best all-around birding spots in the state. “Brig’s” combination of habitats, easy accessibility, and penchant for attracting rare species make this a perennial favorite. Expect a wide range of species from long-legged wading birds to raptors, plus shorebirds and passerines. Restrooms on site. Led by Mike Mandracchia and Hank Burk. One of the gems of the state park system, Island Beach has miles of beach, tidal wetlands, maritime forest and thickets that can host a good diversity of birds, especially if the winds are right. November sees peak numbers of migratory waterfowl, loons, gannets, and other seabirds and is a good time of year for rarities. There is a $5 entry fee for NJ residents who do not have a state park pass or are 65 years of age or older. Be prepared for several hours of walking on flat terrain, sometimes sandy. Bring lunch. Join Chris Marks, Mary Watkins and CMBO Naturalists to explore Edwin B. Forsythe NWR where ducks will be massing, and raptors will be hunting! November is a great month to visit coastal South Jersey. Ducks and geese will be gathering on the back bays and saltmarshes and it’s a great time of year to be looking for the raptors that this mass of birds attracts. Conversational flocks of Brant and Snow Geese and busy parties of Northern Pintail, Northern Shoveler, American Wigeon, Buffleheads and much more will vie for our attention as we hope for views of hunting Northern Harriers, Peregrines, Bald Eagles - maybe even a Golden Eagle. We will spend part of our time at Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge, Brigantine Division, where the managed impoundments provide ideal wintering habitat for wetland birds. After birding the refuge, we will head to nearby Mott’s Creek, a regular - though not guaranteed - site for wintering Short-eared Owls and Rough-legged Hawks. Entrance to the NWR is contingent upon purchase of a $4 Refuge Pass, or possession of a Golden Age Pass or Federal Duck Stamp is required for each vehicle. Join Chris Marks, Dave & Lynn Pollard and CMBO Naturalists, as we explore some of the iconic barrier islands in Cape May County! These long and narrow land strips are teeming with a variety of birds. For this trip, we’ll spend the majority of our time on Seven Mile Island, home to the boroughs of Stone Harbor and Avalon as well as amazing ocean views, dunes, and marshes. As we walk the beaches, we’ll look for wintering shorebirds, gulls, and sparrows. The Avalon jetty is a great spot to try for winter goodies such as Great Cormorant and Purple Sandpiper as well as migrating scoters, loons, and other waterfowl. We may also try for salty sparrows such as Nelson’s and Saltmarsh Sparrow on Nummy Island. We do not set a firm daily schedule in advance, leaving us flexible to maximize birding opportunities, taking advantage of weather conditions, tides, and recent bird sightings. Join CMBO naturalists for 2 hours of birding around beautiful Cape May Point! Crossbills, siskins, redpolls – oh, my! Winter can be such a special time to bird Cape May Point. Each week we’ll scour the Park or wander the streets to see what avian visitors are calling Cape May Point their winter home. The winter finch prediction sounds promising, the ponds are full of ducks, and loons and scoters are on the move. Our path may take us through the quiet streets of Cape May Point, visiting local feeders. Or maybe we’ll travel along the dunes to check the morning flight line. Lily Lake and the Northwood Center often hold wintering songbirds and, of course, the State Park is always good.
