Natural Habitats Trolley Tour
Beyond the charming Victorian homes and sandy beaches, Cape May is world famous for its birdwatching, monarch migration, and natural history. Join Cape May Bird Observatory naturalists on a trolley tour to local “natural habitats” (with exits at two spots), learning about the beauty, diversity, abundance (millions of birds, butterflies, and dragonflies pass through each year), geography, and extensive history of this amazing spectacle. A perennial favorite for many breeding warblers and other songbirds in a beautiful setting during the height of the nesting season. Great roadside birding along the scenic upper Delaware River, with a wide variety of breeding songbirds, including Black-billed Cuckoo, Alder Flycatcher, Louisiana Waterthrush, Worm-eating, Hooded, & Cerulean Warblers. Led by Scott Barnes and Linda Mack. Location: Meet at the Kittatinny Point Visitor Center. Join CMBO naturalists for this 2-hour walk around the Cape May Point State Park and beyond! Not watching birds when in Cape May is like not visiting the Grand Canyon when in Arizona! Join us for a relaxed morning of birding whether you are a seasoned birder or have never really watched birds on purpose before PREREGISTRATION REQUIRED COST: $6 members, $10 nonmembers. Negri-Nepote Grasslands
We’ll search for nesting grassland birds including Grasshopper Sparrow at this hidden gem. This restored grassland hosts a good variety of breeding species including American Kestrel, Black-billed Cuckoo, Grasshopper Sparrow, Orchard Oriole, and Blue Grosbeak. Be prepared for three hours of walking over flat terrain. We’ll also spend a little time looking at butterflies and dragonflies. There are no restrooms on site. Evening birding at the refuge looking for waders, late shorebirds, and marsh birds. We’ll finish by listening for nightjars & owls. We’ll do a leisurely spin around the wildlife drive looking for late shorebirds, breeding species including Clapper Rail, herons, egrets, Seaside and Saltmarsh Sparrows and finish the trip by listening for Chuck-will’s-widow and Eastern Whip-poor-will. NJ Audubon: Old Coal Trail Birdwalk
Join Associate Naturalist Dave Oster to bird around Old Coal Trail in West Milford. We’ll walk the Old Coal Trail and probably an additional trail that runs west and north of Bearfort Waters. These trails lead to higher elevations and dense mountain laurel thickets which should be in bloom. With a little patience it’s usually possible to get good views of nesting Black-throated Blue Warbler. This area is also excellent for Hooded Warbler and a variety of nesting thrushes, vireos, warblers etc. Broad-winged Hawk and Yellow-bellied Sapsucker are also possible. Just a beautiful area and very birdy. Some of the trail has loose rock so sturdy footwear is recommended. Please bring your own binoculars, and spotting scope if desired. There will be no equipment available to borrow. Ticket sales end on 6/10/2022 at 4:00 PM. Registration required. Walk-ins will not be permitted to participate. COST: $15 members, $20 nonmembers. NJ Audubon: Manasquan Inlet and Beach
NJ Audubon: Manasquan Inlet and Beach
Join Associate Naturalist Dave Oster to bird Manasquan Inlet and beach for shorebirds. We'll first bird the back portion of the inlet for any seabirds that may be around. Last June a King Eider and Black-headed Gull were present. We'll then walk about a third of a mile to the beach entrance and cross to the jetty. Highlight here is a marvelous and very active colony of nesting Black Skimmers and Least and Common Terns, and sometimes Oystercatcher. Birds can be easily viewed from the jetty and there are great opportunities for photos. Next we'll spend some time scanning the ocean from the tip of the jetty. Wilson's Storm-petrels are regular in June, often quite close in. Further offshore we may be able to spot Shearwaters, and a few Gannets are typically around. June is also good for whales--last year Dave watched a Fin whale repeatedly breach within binocular range. Potential for lots of sun exposure so protection is recommended. Please bring your own binoculars, and spotting scope if desired. There will be no equipment available to borrow. Ticket sales end on 6/24/2022 at 4:00 PM. Registration required.
