Birding Cape May Point
Cape May Point State Park Hawkwatch Platform NJ, United StatesJoin CMBO naturalists for 2 hours of birding around beautiful Cape May Point! Crossbills, siskins, redpolls – oh, my! Winter can be such a special time to bird Cape May Point. Each week we’ll scour the Park or wander the streets to see what avian visitors are calling Cape May Point their winter home. The winter finch prediction sounds promising, the ponds are full of ducks, and loons and scoters are on the move. Our path may take us through the quiet streets of Cape May Point, visiting local feeders. Or maybe we’ll travel along the dunes to check the morning flight line. Lily Lake and the Northwood Center often hold wintering songbirds and, of course, the State Park is always good. So let us add some joy to your winter – join us every Saturday for 2 hours of birding around Cape May Point. PREREGISTRATION REQUIRED. COST: $8 members, $12 nonmembers. NJ Young Birders Club-Barnegat Lighthouse State Park
Barnegat Lighthouse State Park Broadway, Barnegat Light, NJ, United StatesHarlequins & other sea ducks; p loons and gannets. We'll visit some nearby bayside spots after birding the inlet for additional species. Winter birding in the shadow of "Old Barney," looking for Harlequin Ducks, eiders, and scoters. We may also see loons and gannets. After birding the lighthouse/inlet area, we'll caravan to nearby bayside spots for more species. Meet in the main parking lot of Barnegat Lighthouse State Park. Bring binoculars, spotting scope if you have one, lunch, and dress warmly! For young birders ages 11-17 plus parent/guardian. Led by Scott Barnes and Linda Mack. South Mountain Reservation Birding Meander
South Mountain Reservation - Oakdale Lot just past the Regatta Playground on the left coming from Northfield Ave side. Cherry Lane, Cherry Lane, Cherry Lane, Cherry Lane, West Orange, NJ, United StatesWe will hike several trails in search of wintering songbirds. Target species include both woodland passerines and ducks on the reservoir. We hope to find wintering birds around the reservoir, in hillside forests, and on meadow edges in this very large, well-preserved park. Led by Associate Naturalist Dave Hall. Longtails in Love
Avalon - 8th Street Parking Lot Avalon, NJ, United StatesJoin Program Coordinator Adehl Schwaderer and CMBO naturalists on a search for waterfowl (amorous or otherwise) from Avalon to Cape May! We time this program each year to coincide with the peak of mating activity for Long-tailed Ducks - and this just happens to be right around Valentine’s Day! The wonderful sound of caterwauling Long-tailed Ducks fills the air as amorous males flirt their long tails, plumes and outrageous pink bills, to draw the attention of the seemingly indifferent females. Though this wonderful spectacle will be our main target, we shall also travel through coastal Cape May to find and enjoy a wide range of wintering ducks and other wetland species too. Scoters, mergansers, eiders and many other ducks, plus a great array of shorebirds, cormorants, grebes and much more will be enjoyed. SPOTTING SCOPES ARE HIGHLY RECOMMENDED FOR THIS TRIP We do not set a firm daily schedule in advance, leaving us flexible to maximize birding opportunities, taking advantage of weather conditions, tides, and recent bird sightings. Edwin B Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge 800 Great Creek Road, Galloway, NJ, United StatesSpend a winter afternoon birding at "Brig." Expect good numbers of ducks, geese, and swans. We'll end by looking for nocturnal birds. This afternoon trip will begin by looking for wintering waterfowl and birds of prey. Dusk can be an excellent time to see nocturnal species "waking up," and may include rails, American Bittern, and possibly American Woodcock or Short-eared Owl. Troy Meadows Birding Walk
NJ, United StatesSearch the edges of the swamp for wintering birds. Be prepared for muddy or icy conditions. We will carpool to the trail head. Troy Meadows in Parsippany/East Hanover is an excellent place to encounter wintering birds of prey, marsh birds, and woodland species. Footing can be wet. Led by David Hall.
