Beyond the charming Victorian homes and sandy beaches, Cape May is world famous for its birdwatching, monarch migration, and natural history. Join Cape May Bird Observatory naturalists on a trolley tour to local “natural habitats” (with exits at two spots), learning about the beauty, diversity, abundance (millions of birds, butterflies, and dragonflies pass through each year), geography, and extensive history of this amazing spectacle. NJ Young Birders Club-Cape May Hawk Watch
A focused field trip watching migratory raptors and other birds and learning about how we count them at the hawk watch. This trip is open to young birders plus parent/guardian only and designed to teach young birders about the nature of a migration count, where observers conduct an organized count of migratory birds passing by a particular point. We’ll learn about raptor identification, estimating numbers of birds, the weather conditions that favor the passage of many bird species, tips on picking up distant flocks of hawks and other migrants, and more. Time permitting, we may do some birding along the state park trails or other nearby locations. Led by Adehl Schwaderer, Program Coordinator, and Kristal Stahler, George Meyers Naturalist Cape May Bird Observatory. Location: Meets at the Cape May Point State Park. Wildcrafting with Acorns
Go from inedible to delicious in this exploration of all thing's acorn! Learn how to turn them into nutritious flour as we crack nuts around the fire pit and taste acorn bread. Bring acorns if you have them! Dress for outdoor weather around the campfire. Children must be accompanied by an adult; this is not a drop-off program. Natural Habitats Trolley Tour
Beyond the charming Victorian homes and sandy beaches, Cape May is world famous for its birdwatching, monarch migration, and natural history. Join Cape May Bird Observatory naturalists on a trolley tour to local “natural habitats” (with exits at two spots), learning about the beauty, diversity, abundance (millions of birds, butterflies, and dragonflies pass through each year), geography, and extensive history of this amazing spectacle. Relax and be entertained in the birding capital of North America! Co-sponsored by New Jersey Audubon's Cape May Bird Observatory and the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts and Humanities. Led by Dorothy Smullen, Teacher/Naturalist, former president of the New Jersey Mycological Association Join Teacher/naturalist Dorothy Smullen for an all-day NJ Audubon Institute For Field Naturalists workshop about all things "mushroom." Using keys, field guides, Powerpoint presentations, and a trail walk we will cover the basics of identification, and learn about the importance of fungi for the ecosystem and the future. THE RAVEN – Story Reading and Campfire
Join us for a cozy evening of spooky tales around the campfire at New Jersey Audubon's Scherman Hoffman Wildlife Sanctuary. Listen to the haunting words of Edgar Allan Poe's classic poem, "The Raven," as you roast marshmallows drink hot chocolate and enjoy the crisp autumn air. Don't miss out on this unique storytelling experience under the stars! Dave Pasake, retired Elementary School teacher, will read The Raven, a classic poem by Edgar Allan Poe about a man's grief and despair after the death of his lover Lenore. The poem features a mysterious raven that repeats the word "nevermore". Dave will discuss the American writer and poet, Edgar Allen Poe, as well as the Common Raven, a bird that is found year-round in North America, Europe and Asia. This program is suitable for families, adults and children alike. The Raven will be read outdoors around a fire pit. Hot chocolate will be served. Dress appropriately for the cooler night-time temperatures. The reading will take place indoors, in case of rain. Come enjoy the changing of the seasons.
