Feeding Frenzy
The animals at the nature center are hungry for some lunch! Come observe feeding time and get to know our snakes and turtles. Each of our animal ambassadors can be found in New Jersey. Learn about their habitats, diets, and awesome adaptations! COST: FREE (suggested $5 donation) Limited to groups of up to 20 participants during this time. Children may not participate without an adult. Beachcombing the Cove
Walk the Cove with a local naturalist and discover the gifts the sea leaves behind at the water's edge. Explore one of the area’s ever-changing coastal habitats — the beach, ocean, and dunes of Cape May’s “The Cove” beach. We’ll search the shallows, comb the shoreline for treasures, and walk along the dunes in search of wildlife. WHERE: Meet at the flagpole near the Pavilion at the end of promenade by the Cove beach. Help pull our seine net through the Cape May Harbor and see first hand what creatures inhabit the waters. Encounter an incredible diversity of marine life as you help pull a twenty-foot seine net through the shallows of Cape May Harbor. You will learn about the ecology of our coastal waters, and about the fascinating and ancient Horseshoe Crab. A great family outing! Pre-registration is required. COST: $10 adults, $5 children ages 3-12, children under 3 free. Limited to groups of up to 20 participants during this time. Children may not participate without an adult. INFORMATION: Meet 5-10 minutes prior to your program time at the picnic tables in front of the Trucksess Welcome Center at 1600 Delaware Avenue. We may walk up to 1.5 miles, over generally level, sometimes muddy or sandy terrain. Some trips involve walks over rocky and sandy area. Please bring necessary footwear, sun screen, bug spray, water bottle, and other belongings with you that you may need. Restrooms will be available to the public 30 minutes before and after the program. Meet a Nature Center Naturalist on the beach for an hour of ghost crab hunting! Learn about ghost crab habitat, how they move, and what they eat. Do you think you can catch one? Discover what other creatures are on the beach at night. Pre-registration required. WHERE: Meet at the end of Mount Vernon Avenue near the end of the Promenade in Cape May. Lorrimer’s Lightning Bugs!
Spend the evening learning about, observing, and catching lightning bugs at Lorrimer Sanctuary! Whether you call them lightning bugs or fireflies—we all recognize the sense of joy that these critters bring us! Pack a picnic blanket and your sense of wonder as we encounter lightning bugs at Lorrimer Sanctuary and dive deeper into their unique ecology. Participants will engage in a community science program called Firefly Watch and will leave empowered to identify species of fireflies in their own yard. COST: $10 members / $15 nonmembers IMPORTANT INFORMATION: Dress appropriately for the weather. This program is entirely outdoors. Discover what other creatures are on the beach at night. Pre-registration required. WHERE: Meet at the end of Mount Vernon Avenue near the end of the Promenade in Cape May. WHEN: Thursday evenings. 8:00 P.M.-9:00 P.M. WHO CAN JOIN?: A wonderful family program! Children may not participate without an adult. EQUIPMENT NEEDED: We will provide at least 1 "Ghost Crab Catcher 5000" Flashlights (Cell phone flashlights work too!) Join us for an exploration of the Cape May Harbor led by our 4-H teen leaders! Encounter an incredible diversity of marine life as you help pull a twenty-foot seine net through the shallows of Cape May Harbor. You will learn about the ecology of our coastal waters, and about the fascinating and ancient Horseshoe Crab. COST: Free with suggested donation. Contact us at 609.427.3045 for private group tours and rates. IMPORTANT INFORMATION: Meet 5-10 minutes prior to your program time at the picnic tables in front of the Trucksess Welcome Center at 1600 Delaware Avenue. We may walk up to 1.5 miles, over generally level, sometimes muddy or sandy terrain. Some trips involve walks over rocky and sandy area. Please bring necessary footwear, sun screen, bug spray, water bottle, and other belongings with you that you may need. Restrooms will be available to the public 30 minutes before and after the program. Walk the Cove with a local naturalist and discover the gifts the sea leaves behind at the water's edge. Explore one of the area’s ever-changing coastal habitats — the beach, ocean, and dunes of Cape May’s “The Cove” beach. We’ll search the shallows, comb the shoreline for treasures, and walk along the dunes in search of wildlife. WHERE: Meet at the flagpole near the Pavilion at the end of promenade by the Cove beach.
