These walks are informal and informative: birds, trees, tracks, wildflowers, reptiles, and amphibians are a few of nature’s wonders waiting for us to discover. The walks are cancelled if there is snow, rain, or weather warnings. Registration required by 4:00 PM the day before the walk. Pre-registration Required. COST: Free for members, $5 nonmembers. Poisonous Plants – The Sinister Garden Walk
Lorrimer Sanctuary 790 Ewing Avenue, Franklin Lakes, NJ, United StatesFollowing the footprint of Lorrimer Sanctuary's past "Sinister Garden", we'll be observing and learning to recognize some of NJ's poisonous plants. From common garden weeds to well-known ornamental plants to native forest plants, this walk features something for everyone! Head out on a guided tour through our trails, where you'll encounter a variety of fascinating poisonous plants that have. Our knowledgeable staff will share anecdotes and cautionary tales about these cool (and occasionally sinister!) plants. Discover the secrets behind well-known plants like Foxglove, Bleeding Heart, and Nightshade as well as their less well-known peers! Learn about their toxic properties, historical uses, the myths and legends surrounding them, and their effects on local wildlife. This event is perfect for nature enthusiasts of all ages! Don't miss out on this unique chance to explore the darker side of the botanical world. This is not a drop-off program. Any children must be accompanied by an adult. Nature Center of Cape May 1600 Delaware Avenue, Cape May, NJ, United StatesHelp pull a seine net through the Cape May Harbor to see first-hand what creatures inhabit the waters. Encounter an incredible diversity of marine life as you help pull a twenty-foot seine net through the shallows of Cape May Harbor. You will learn about the ecology of our coastal waters, and about the fascinating and ancient Horseshoe Crab. A great family outing! Pre-registration is required COST: $12 adults, $6 children ages 3-12, children under 3 free. Limited to groups of up to 20 participants during this time. MEETING LOCATION: Meet 5-10 minutes prior to your program time at the picnic tables in front of the Trucksess Welcome Center at 1600 Delaware Avenue. Beachcombing the Cove
Sunset Pavilion 62 Beach Avenue, Cape May, NJ, United StatesWalk the Cove with a naturalist to discover the gifts the sea leaves behind at the water's edge. Explore one of the area’s ever-changing coastal habitats — the beach, ocean, and dunes of Cape May’s “The Cove” beach. We’ll search the shallows, comb the shoreline for treasures, and walk along the dunes in search of wildlife. Expand your trail knowledge during this informative guided walk with Mary Birrer, Teacher Naturalist at NJ Audubon’s Lorrimer Sanctuary. On this approximately 2-mile walk through varying habitats, Mary will offer her expertise through a naturalist’s lens; explaining the relationships between plant communities and the birds that rely on them and observing (and identifying!) the sights and sounds of the forest. This is an opportunity to share your thoughts and ideas 1:1 or in a small group setting. Share your history, involvement, and love of the Sanctuary, give input and feedback regarding the center and get your thoughts and ideas heard. Get your steps in with Jan while learning more about Scherman Hoffman’s future plans! Walk subject to cancellation due to inclement weather. Pre-registration required.
