Nest Box Clean Out Hike
Scherman Hoffman Wildlife Sanctuary 11 Hardscrabble Rd, Bernardsville, NJ, United StatesJoin our Stewardship Technician Will to walk the grounds of Scherman Hoffman to clean and prepare our next boxes for the spring. Cleaning old bird nests is a crucial aspect of responsible bird care. While it might seem counterintuitive to remove what appears to be a cozy home, there are several compelling reasons why this practice is essential for the health and well-being of our feathered friends. Old nests can harbor parasites, bacteria, and other harmful organisms that can pose serious threats to future broods. By removing these potential hazards, we create a safer environment for nesting birds and increase the chances of successful breeding in the coming seasons. Additionally, cleaning out old nests helps prevent the accumulation of debris and waste, which can attract unwanted pests and predators. This simple act of maintenance can make a significant difference in the overall ecosystem of your backyard, promoting a healthier and more diverse bird population.
