Backyard Birding and Wildlife Gardening for Beginners
NEW FOR 2021! Has the recent explosion of interest in "birding" piqued your curiosity? Join CMBO Northwood staff for an introduction about starting this endlessly fascinating pastime right in your own yard! We will slowly stroll the Ryan DeWitt Trail at CMBO's Northwood Center and briefly review three approaches to birding: finding and identifying birds; bird feeding; and turning turning your yard into a haven for birds, butterflies, and much more. Beachcombing the Cove
Sunset Pavilion 62 Beach Avenue, Cape May, NJ, United StatesWalk the Cove with a local naturalist and discover the gifts the sea leaves behind at the water's edge. Explore one of the area’s ever-changing coastal habitats — the beach, ocean, and dunes of Cape May’s “The Cove” beach. We’ll search the shallows, comb the shoreline for treasures, and walk along the dunes in search of wildlife. WHERE: Meet at the flagpole near the Pavilion at the end of promenade by the Cove beach. WHEN: Wednesday mornings. 8:30 A.M.-9:30 A.M. WHO CAN JOIN?: A wonderful program for the whole family! Children may not participate without an adult. Explore the Shore
Nature Center of Cape May 1600 Delaware Avenue, Cape May, NJ, United StatesJoin us for an exploration of the Cape May Harbor led by our 4-H teen leaders! Encounter an incredible diversity of marine life as you help pull a twenty-foot seine net through the shallows of Cape May Harbor. You will learn about the ecology of our coastal waters, and about the fascinating and ancient Horseshoe Crab. COST: Free with suggested donation. IMPORTANT INFORMATION: Meet 5-10 minutes prior to your program time at the picnic tables in front of the Trucksess Welcome Center at 1600 Delaware Avenue. We may walk up to 1.5 miles, over generally level, sometimes muddy or sandy terrain. Some trips involve walks over rocky and sandy area. Please bring necessary footwear, sun screen, bug spray, water bottle, and other belongings with you that you may need. Restrooms will be available to the public 30 minutes before and after the program. Lorrimer Sanctuary 790 Ewing Avenue, Franklin Lakes, NJ, United StatesAn evening of stargazing and story-telling at Lorrimer Sanctuary! Do you love looking at the stars? Never really had time to learn about the constellations but always wanted to? Join a Lorrimer Sanctuary naturalist for an evening of stargazing and story-telling. Download an app to let you observe the sky yourself, learn which constellations can be seen in the summer night sky, and hear some of the fantastical myths that were created about the stars by ancient cultures. New Jersey Audubon's Scherman Hoffman Wildlife Sanctuary 11 Hardscrabble Road, Bernardsville, NJ, United StatesEnjoy a quiet morning at the Sanctuary walking the trails with an NJ Audubon staff or Associate Naturalist. These walks are informal and informative: birds, trees, tracks, wildflowers, reptiles, and amphibians are a few of nature’s wonders waiting for us to discover. The walks are cancelled if there is snow, rain, or weather warnings. Registration required by 5:00 PM the day before the walk. You must pre-register, walk-ins will not be allowed to participate. One person per ticket. Face masks and social distancing required; please bring your own binoculars, loaner binoculars will not be available. COST: Free for members, $5 nonmembers.
