Cape May Bird Observatory

A Philadelphia Inquirer story on Thursday, December 7th, unfortunately misstated and presented facts in ways that create undue concerns about our Cape May Bird Observatory (CMBO) and the property listed for sale. Frank Kummer’s “Want to Buy a Bird Sanctuary” opens by stating that “NJ Audubon is selling its Cape May Bird Observatory and Center for Research and Education.” The Cape May Bird Observatory is not for sale. The listed property, which housed our Center for Research and Education, is largely undevelopable wetlands where native plants, birds and other wildlife will continue to thrive. By selling a building with underutilized office and retail space, New Jersey Audubon will reduce our office footprint and generate additional funding to sustain and expand research and education programs, while investing in enhancements to CMBO’s Northwood Center and other facilities around the state.

NJ Audubon and our Cape May Bird Observatory rely on contributions from members and other donors. We strive to deploy these funds efficiently to create the greatest benefits for people and wildlife. Our Cape May Bird Observatory will continue to provide signature programming into the future.
