A very warm Saturday morning in July. Purple Martins were moving about constantly over the parking lot, ponds, and dunes while a few would land on the beach. The high-pitched shriek of Least Terns was prevalent as they flew about, some with small fish flipping in their bills. As we walked along the dunes and plover ponds Killdeer, Short-billed Dowitchers, and some Least Sandpipers flew by, while a Lesser Yellowlegs explored the pond edges for tidbits of who knows what. Nice to see shorebirds on their southbound migration starting. It appears some species are announcing claim to their territories after nesting. Four different Indigo Buntings were sitting atop trees, as well as an Eastern Towhee, belting out their songs for the world around to hear. Truly a mid-July day in Cape May.
