Beyond the charming Victorian homes and sandy beaches, Cape May is world famous for its birdwatching, monarch migration, and natural history. Join Cape May Bird Observatory naturalists on a trolley tour to local “natural habitats” (with exits at two spots), learning about the beauty, diversity, abundance (millions of birds, butterflies, and dragonflies pass through each year), geography, and extensive history of this amazing spectacle. Relax and be entertained in the birding capital of North America! Co-sponsored by New Jersey Audubon's Cape May Bird Observatory and the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts and Humanities. Walk the Cove with a naturalist to discover the gifts the sea leaves behind at the water's edge. Explore one of the area’s ever-changing coastal habitats — the beach, ocean, and dunes of Cape May’s “The Cove” beach. We’ll search the shallows, comb the shoreline for treasures, and walk along the dunes in search of wildlife. Pre-registration is required COST: $12 adults, $6 children ages 3-12, children under 3 free. WHO CAN JOIN?: A wonderful program for the whole family! Children may not participate without an adult. Contact us at 609.427.3045 for private group tours and rates. MEETING LOCATION: Meet at the flagpole near the Pavilion at the end of promenade by the Cove beach. Join us on Wednesdays from 4-5pm at the Nature Center of Cape May for a 1-hour Monarch Meet-up! Each week, we will explore a Monarch Butterfly-related topic through walks, crafts, activities, and/or stories. This program is designed for all children ages 5-9. Your child will get a chance to examine the life of a monarch butterfly, from their host plants to their magnificent migration! Weekly topics are listed below. Preregistration required. This is a drop-off program, but parents are welcome to stay for the fun. WEEKLY THEMES: September 4th: Into the garden - Learn about milkweed and other native plants that support monarch butterflies. Help separate milkweed seeds from their seed pods, create a planter, and take home your own milkweed seeds! September 11th: Lifecycle of a monarch butterfly - Explore our native gardens in search of monarch eggs, caterpillars, and butterflies! Then, learn about the lifecycle of a monarch butterfly with a hands-on craft! September 18th: Migration madness - Learn about the migration of monarch butterflies. Then, go on a migration journey as a monarch butterfly. September 25th: Monarch tagging - Learn how researchers tag monarch butterflies watch a real-life demonstration. From May-Oct, we'll walk the trails at Lorrimer Sanctuary looking for birds of all kinds including beautiful migratory warbler species that will only stop in NJ for a short time on their way north. Explore one of the area’s ever-changing coastal habitats — the beach, ocean, and dunes of Cape May’s “The Cove” beach. We’ll search the shallows, comb the shoreline for treasures, and walk along the dunes in search of wildlife. Join Cape May Bird Observatory naturalists on a trolley tour to local “natural habitats” (with exits at two spots), learning about the beauty, diversity, abundance (millions of birds, butterflies, and dragonflies pass through each year), geography, and extensive history of this amazing spectacle. Who is hanging around the nature center after hours? Thursday evenings in October, we will explore the lives of Cape May’s nocturnal critters, from the bats and owls flying overhead to the creepy-crawly critters hiding in the leaves. We will set up a moth observation station, learn owl calls, and monitor bat movement! Enjoy a cup of hot chocolate to stay warm on these crisp Autumn nights! Limited to 30 participants. Pre-registration is required. COST: Children (under 12) $6, Adults $12. Children under 2 are free! Join us at Lorrimer Sanctuary at 8AM on Fridays for a gentle birding stroll around the grounds. Learn how to identify and listen for bird species of all kinds during this hour-long birding program. From May-Oct, we'll walk the trails at Lorrimer Sanctuary looking for birds of all kinds including beautiful migratory warbler species that will only stop in NJ for a short time on their way north.
