We explore the coastal saltmarsh of Cape May from Cape Island Creek to the Wildwoods and view the natural wonders of historic Cape May Harbor. The Osprey is a 37' pontoon boat that has a comfortable enclosed cabin with large viewing windows, a front deck with a railing, and a restroom on board. Non-motorized wheelchair accessible. Join Cape May Bird Observatory naturalists on a trolley tour to local “natural habitats” (with exits at two spots), learning about the beauty, diversity, abundance (millions of birds, butterflies, and dragonflies pass through each year), geography, and extensive history of this amazing spectacle. Thursday evenings in October, we will explore the lives of Cape May’s nocturnal critters, from the bats and owls flying overhead to the creepy-crawly critters hiding in the leaves. We will set up a moth observation station, learn owl calls, and monitor bat movement! Enjoy a cup of hot chocolate to stay warm on these crisp Autumn nights! Limited to 30 participants. Join us at Lorrimer Sanctuary at 8AM on Fridays for a gentle birding stroll around the grounds. Learn how to identify and listen for bird species of all kinds during this hour-long birding program. From May-Oct, we'll walk the trails at Lorrimer Sanctuary looking for birds of all kinds including beautiful migratory warbler species that will only stop in NJ for a short time on their way north. This program is open to all birders, from beginner to experienced! Great for adults or families. COST: Free for NJA members, $5 for non-members. IMPORTANT INFORMATION: Dress for the weather. Learn how to make apple cider from tree to juice using an old-fashioned cider press and taste different kinds of apples during the process! Join Lorrimer Sanctuary staff for a fun family program all about apple cider! We'll learn about apple trees and where apples come from, use an old-fashioned cider press to turn our apples into juice (and taste test some delicious and fresh local cider and apples!), and make an apple stamp craft too! Who is hanging around the nature center after hours? Thursday evenings in October, we will explore the lives of Cape May’s nocturnal critters, from the bats and owls flying overhead to the creepy-crawly critters hiding in the leaves. We will set up a moth observation station, learn owl calls, and monitor bat movement! Enjoy a cup of hot chocolate to stay warm on these crisp Autumn nights! Limited to 30 participants. Join us for a cozy evening of spooky tales around the campfire at New Jersey Audubon’s Scherman Hoffman Wildlife Sanctuary. Listen to the haunting words of Edgar Allan Poe’s classic poem, “The Raven” and the short story “The Tell-Tale Heart” as you roast marshmallows, drink hot chocolate, and enjoy the crisp autumn air. Don’t miss out on this unique storytelling experience under the stars! Dave Pasake, retired Elementary School teacher, will read selections from “The Raven” and “The Tell-Tale Heart,” classic works by Edgar Allan Poe. The Raven features a mysterious raven that repeats the word “nevermore”; “The Tell-Tale Heart” features a man with an eye like a vulture. Dave will discuss the American writer and poet, Edgar Allen Poe, as well as the Common Raven and the Turkey Vulture, birds that are found year-round in North America. This program is suitable for families, adults and children alike. The readings will be outdoors around a fire pit. Hot chocolate will be served. Come celebrate Halloween at the Nature Center of Cape May with some not-so-spooky fun for the whole family! Swing by for a howling good time, including sweet treats, live-animal encounters, and spooky surprises. Stop by anytime 6pm-8pm. It is free to explore the nature center, and we will have various activities for ghouls and ghosts of all ages. Trick-or-treat trail is $10 a person, and you must reserve a timeslot ahead of time. Costumes encouraged! Children must be accompanied by an adult for all activities. Here’s what we have brewing: Hoot & Howl Trick-or-Treat Trail- Take a prowl down our decorated nature trail. Meet some misunderstood nocturnal critters, learn about their lives, and collect candy along the way! Keep your eyes peeled for owls and bats swooping overhead. Animal Artifact Graveyard- Peek into the past and explore real bones and artifacts from local animals. Pumpkin Painting and Children’s Crafts- Paint-your-own pumpkin to take home! Suggested $5 donation. Moth Sheet Station- Check out our moth sheeting station to see what creepy crawly critters come out after dark.
