Harbor Safari
Help pull a seine net through the Cape May Harbor to see first-hand what creatures inhabit the waters. Encounter an incredible diversity of marine life as you help pull a twenty-foot seine net through the shallows of Cape May Harbor. You will learn about the ecology of our coastal waters, and about the fascinating and ancient Horseshoe Crab. A great family outing! Pre-registration is required COST: $12 adults, $6 children ages 3-12, children under 3 free. Limited to groups of up to 20 participants during this time. Children may not participate without an adult. Contact us at 609.427.3045 for private group tours and rates. IMPORTANT INFORMATION: Meet 5-10 minutes prior to your program time at the picnic tables in front of the Trucksess Welcome Center at 1600 Delaware Avenue. We may walk up to 1.5 miles, over generally level, sometimes muddy or sandy terrain. Some trips involve walks over rocky and sandy area. Please bring necessary footwear, sunscreen, bug spray, water bottle, and other belongings with you that you may need. Beachcombing the Cove
Walk the Cove with a naturalist to discover the gifts the sea leaves behind at the water's edge. Explore one of the area’s ever-changing coastal habitats — the beach, ocean, and dunes of Cape May’s “The Cove” beach. We’ll search the shallows, comb the shoreline for treasures, and walk along the dunes in search of wildlife. Pre-registration is required COST: $12 adults, $6 children ages 3-12, children under 3 free. Children may not participate without an adult. Meet a Nature Center Naturalist on the beach for an hour of ghost crab chasing! Learn about ghost crab habitat, how they move, and what they eat. Do you think you can catch one? Join us twice a month to hike/walk the grounds of Scherman Hoffman with our new Center Director, Jan Hudson. This is an opportunity to share your thoughts and ideas 1:1 or in a small group setting. Share your history, involvement, and love of the Sanctuary, give input and feedback regarding the center and get your thoughts and ideas heard. Get your steps in with Jan while learning more about Scherman Hoffman’s future plans! Walk subject to cancellation due to inclement weather. Pre-registration required. NJ Audubon: Family Wildlife Treasure Hunt
Led by Dorothy Smullen, Teacher/Naturalist. Join teacher/naturalist Dorothy Smullen for an afternoon of searching for all kinds of plants and animals: vertebrates including fish in the river, insects and other arthropods in the field, and mosses, ferns, and fungi in the forest. We will even collect pond water to search for tiny wildlife under the microscope. Youngsters will have a nature bingo sheet, and older children will have a “Tree of Life” sheet to record the plants and animals we find. Registration required by 9/9 at 4:00 PM. NJ Audubon: Explore Hawk Rise with a StoryWalk TM
Led by Angus Macaulay, NJ Audubon Teacher Naturalist Bring a book to life by reading in a unique environment! Take a StoryWalk TM with us through Hawk Rise Sanctuary and discover this wonderful park in a whole new way. While reading the story we will make discovery stops and have some hands-on fun. This program is appropriate for children ages 2 to 6. Refreshments will be served afterwards. The StoryWalk TM concept was created by Anne Ferguson and developed in cooperation with the Kellogg Hubbard Library and the Vermont Bicycle & Pedestrian Coalition. National Coffee Day
National Coffee Day is coming up on Friday September 29th! Get caffeinated with us while we sip some of our Birds and Beans Coffee. Birds and Beans Coffee is sold in our gift shop and is Bird Friendly® Coffee. Rather than being grown on farms that have been cleared of vegetation, Bird Friendly coffees are planted under a canopy of trees. These trees provide the shelter, food and homes migratory and local birds need to survive. Enjoy chatting with our Sanctuary Director about the future plans for Lorrimer Sanctuary and watch the birds through our picture window in our classroom!
