Backyard Birding and Wildlife Gardening for Beginners
NEW FOR 2021! Has the recent explosion of interest in "birding" piqued your curiosity? Join CMBO Northwood staff for an introduction about starting this endlessly fascinating pastime right in your own yard! We will slowly stroll the Ryan DeWitt Trail at CMBO's Northwood Center and briefly review three approaches to birding: finding and identifying birds; bird feeding; and turning turning your yard into a haven for birds, butterflies, and much more. Harbor Safari
Nature Center of Cape May 1600 Delaware Avenue, Cape May, NJ, United StatesHelp pull our seine net through the Cape May Harbor and see first hand what creatures inhabit the waters. Encounter an incredible diversity of marine life as you help pull a twenty-foot seine net through the shallows of Cape May Harbor. You will learn about the ecology of our coastal waters, and about the fascinating and ancient Horseshoe Crab. A great family outing! Pre-registration is required. COST: $10 adults, $5 children ages 3-12, children under 3 free. Limited to groups of up to 20 participants during this time. Children may not participate without an adult. INFORMATION: Meet 5-10 minutes prior to your program time at the picnic tables in front of the Trucksess Welcome Center at 1600 Delaware Avenue. We may walk up to 1.5 miles, over generally level, sometimes muddy or sandy terrain. Some trips involve walks over rocky and sandy area. Please bring necessary footwear, sun screen, bug spray, water bottle, and other belongings with you that you may need. Restrooms will be available to the public 30 minutes before and after the program. Beachcombing the Cove
Sunset Pavilion 62 Beach Avenue, Cape May, NJ, United StatesWalk the Cove with a local naturalist and discover the gifts the sea leaves behind at the water's edge. Explore one of the area’s ever-changing coastal habitats — the beach, ocean, and dunes of Cape May’s “The Cove” beach. We’ll search the shallows, comb the shoreline for treasures, and walk along the dunes in search of wildlife. WHERE: Meet at the flagpole near the Pavilion at the end of promenade by the Cove beach. Sundowner By Boat on The Osprey

The very best Cape May sunsets await as you cruise by nesting Osprey and seek out elusive Clapper Rails - all with the most spectacular of natural backdrops! Nighttime on the Beach

Learn about ghost crab habitat, how they move, and what they eat. Do you think you can catch one? Discover what other creatures are on the beach at night. Pre-registration required. Morning Walk at Scherman Hoffman Wildlife Sanctuary
New Jersey Audubon's Scherman Hoffman Wildlife Sanctuary 11 Hardscrabble Road, Bernardsville, NJ, United StatesEnjoy a quiet morning at the Sanctuary walking the trails with an NJ Audubon staff or Associate Naturalist. These walks are informal and informative: birds, trees, tracks, wildflowers, reptiles, and amphibians are a few of nature’s wonders waiting for us to discover. The walks are cancelled if there is snow, rain, or weather warnings. Registration required by 5:00 PM the day before the walk. You must pre-register, walk-ins will not be allowed to participate. Forsythe (Brigantine) NWR
Edwin B Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge 800 Great Creek Road, Galloway, NJ, United StatesSummer is a great time for shorebirds, herons, egrets, and terns at one of the best birding spots in the state. It might be mid-summer, but bird migration is well underway beginning in July. Each week should bring different species of shorebirds as they stop to feed and rest at this productive refuge. There are usually good numbers of herons, egrets, and ibis present. Also present may be various terns and songbirds. Multiple habitats here ensure a good variety of birds.
