Half Day Fridays at Sandy Hook

Fall birding at the hook: we may encounter anything from shorebirds and terns to flycatchers, sparrows, and warblers. A wide variety of habitats ensure good bird diversity at one of the state’s best spots. Be prepared for 3-4 hours of walking over flat and sandy surfaces. Led by Scott Barnes, Linda Mack, Carole Hughes, & other associate naturalists. NJ Audubon Hawk Watches at Scherman Hoffman Observation Deck

New Jersey Audubon's Scherman Hoffman Wildlife Sanctuary 11 Hardscrabble Road, Bernardsville, NJ, United States

Join our Naturalist on the observation deck for a bird’s eye view of fall migration. We'll be looking for migrating raptors and any passerines passing through. Marvel at the spectacular view of Broad-winged Hawk kettles as they fly over the sanctuary, Bald Eagles, and other raptors. Hawk Watches are scheduled for Fridays, 10/6, 10/13, 10/20, and 10/27 from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Loaner binoculars will be available. Note: a hawk watch day will be cancelled if there is rain, snow, or weather warnings. Registration and fee are per date. You must pre-register for each date you wish to attend. Ticket sales ends at 4:00 PM on the day before each hawk watch. One person per ticket. COST: Free for members, $5 nonmembers. Interested in becoming a member? Join the Monarch Monitoring Project team to learn about the Monarch butterflies that migrate through Cape May, as well as the ongoing research and outreach our staff is doing to help protect the species. After the talk, watch as small tags are affixed to Monarchs to track their migration to Mexico. And best of all, you'll learn how you can contribute to Monarch conservation! Join CMBO naturalists for this 2-hour walk around the Rea Farm "Beanery" property! NJ Audubon has leased the birding privileges on this working farm where the field edges regularly attract warblers, sparrows, and other fall migrants. It's also a great place to see migrant raptors overhead. PREREGISTRATION REQUIRED. COST: $8 members, $12 nonmembers. Interested in becoming a member? TRANSPORTATION: We may walk up to 1.5 miles, over generally level, sometimes muddy or sandy terrain. Some trips involve walks over jetties. These walks are informal and informative: birds, trees, tracks, wildflowers, reptiles, and amphibians are a few of nature’s wonders waiting for us to discover. Led by Chris and Paula Williams, Associate Naturalists. The trees are turning to their fall colors and birds are on their way south - a good time to see a wide variety of migrant birds. This site is one of the first grassland restoration projects NJ Audubon has implemented for Franklin Township and is now in its 18th successful year. Bring binoculars if you have them.
