We explore the coastal saltmarsh of Cape May from Cape Island Creek to the Wildwoods and view the natural wonders of historic Cape May Harbor. The Osprey is a 37' pontoon boat that has a comfortable enclosed cabin with large viewing windows, a front deck with a railing, and a restroom on board. Non-motorized wheelchair accessible. Learn the art of fishing at Fishing Basics: get hands-on experience, expert tips, and have a reel-y great time! Join us for a fun-filled day of fishing basics! Whether you're a beginner or just want to brush up on your skills, this in-person event is perfect for you. Our experienced instructors will cover everything from casting techniques to knot tying. You'll also learn about bait selection and fish identification. This is a great opportunity to meet fellow fishing enthusiasts and enjoy the great outdoors. So, grab your friends and family and get ready for a day of reeling in some unforgettable memories! AND you'll get the chance to try your luck at fishing! Join Cape May Bird Observatory naturalists on a trolley tour to local “natural habitats” (with exits at two spots), learning about the beauty, diversity, abundance (millions of birds, butterflies, and dragonflies pass through each year), geography, and extensive history of this amazing spectacle. Marvel at the spectacular view of Broad-winged Hawk kettles as they fly over the sanctuary, Bald Eagles, and other raptors. Hawk Watches are scheduled for Thursdays, 10/ 5, 10/12, 10/19, and 10/26 from 1:00 to 3:00 PM. Loaner binoculars will be available. Note: a hawk watch day will be cancelled if there is rain, snow, or weather warnings. Registration and fee are per date. You must pre-register for each date you wish to attend. Join Lorrimer Sanctuary for a Nature Tech Walk where we will be investigating our natural world using phone apps like iNaturalist, Seek, and Merlin to identify the birds, plants, and animals around us! Technology isn't so bad when you can use it to better your identification skills, sharpen your nature photography, keep track of your life list, or tune your ear to special bird call. Meghan Kolk and George Reed - Featured Artists at the Harbor Gallery in Cape May! The Harbor Gallery is pleased to announce their featured local artists for the month of October. Meghan Kolk and George Reed will display their works with an opening reception to meet the artists on October 6th from 4-6pm. Join CMBO Director Brett Ewald and CMBO Naturalists for this workshop. Bird the “raptor capital of North America” at the peak of diversity. Bird the “raptor capital of North America” at the peak of diversity, when falcons are zipping along the dunes, accipiters are flap, flap, flapping by, buteos are soaring overhead, and eagles are chasing Ospreys. Early October often produces flights in the thousands and is the peak time for Peregrine Falcons and others. It is a rare moment during October in Cape May when raptors are not in view and this concentration of birds should ensure that we almost always have something to look at. Learn how to tell buteos from accipiters, falcons from eagles, at the very edge of your eyesight or right overhead, and focus on tricky species-pairs, such as the many ways to tell Sharp-shinned from Cooper’s Hawks. We’ll visit areas around Cape May to make the most of your raptor watching on this “in the field” workshop. We’ll also be in a prime location to enjoy other migrants, such as shorebirds, late warblers, early sparrows, and more! Because of the inherent dynamic nature of birding, we do not pre-set an exact itinerary but will visit those parts of Cape May County that regularly hold good numbers of birds. This beautiful park can be great for a wide variety of migrant birds from shorebirds to waders, falcons, thrushes & warblers. One of the gems of the state park system, Island Beach has miles of beach, tidal wetlands, maritime forest and thickets that can host a good diversity of birds, especially if the winds are right. There is a $5 entry fee for NJ residents who do not have a state park pass or are 65 years of age or older. Be prepared for several hours of walking on flat terrain, sometimes sandy. Bring lunch. We explore the coastal saltmarsh of Cape May from Cape Island Creek to the Wildwoods and view the natural wonders of historic Cape May Harbor. Join CMBO Director Brett Ewald and CMBO Naturalists for this workshop. Bird the “raptor capital of North America” at the peak of diversity. Bird the “raptor capital of North America” at the peak of diversity, when falcons are zipping along the dunes, accipiters are flap, flap, flapping by, buteos are soaring overhead, and eagles are chasing Ospreys. Early October often produces flights in the thousands and is the peak time for Peregrine Falcons and others. It is a rare moment during October in Cape May when raptors are not in view and this concentration of birds should ensure that we almost always have something to look at. Learn how to tell buteos from accipiters, falcons from eagles, at the very edge of your eyesight or right overhead, and focus on tricky species-pairs, such as the many ways to tell Sharp-shinned from Cooper’s Hawks. We’ll visit areas around Cape May to make the most of your raptor watching on this “in the field” workshop. We’ll also be in a prime location to enjoy other migrants, such as shorebirds, late warblers, early sparrows, and more! Because of the inherent dynamic nature of birding, we do not pre-set an exact itinerary but will visit those parts of Cape May County that regularly hold good numbers of birds. October can be excellent for migratory songbirds and other species at this coastal hotspot. We may encounter terns, waders, warblers and more. Join our Naturalist on the observation deck for a bird’s eye view of fall migration. We'll be looking for migrating raptors and any passerines passing through. Marvel at the spectacular view of Broad-winged Hawk kettles as they fly over the sanctuary, Bald Eagles, and other raptors. Hawk Watches are scheduled for Thursdays, 10/ 5, 10/12, 10/19, and 10/26 from 1:00 to 3:00 PM. Loaner binoculars will be available. Join our Naturalist on the observation deck for a bird’s eye view of fall migration. We'll be looking for migrating raptors and any passerines passing through. Marvel at the spectacular view of Broad-winged Hawk kettles as they fly over the sanctuary, Bald Eagles, and other raptors. Patriot’s Path is a well-maintained trail that winds through grassy and scrubby areas in Parsippany adjacent to Troy Meadows. In October Patriot's Path can be outstanding for sparrows with 6 or more species present on a good day. Patriot's Path is also excellent for short distance migrants such as kinglets, Yellow-rumped and Palm Warblers. Join Louise Zemaitis for this three-day birding workshop exploring Cape May during the best time of year for massive bird fallouts! This is the time at Cape May that the local birders wait for; visiting crowds of keen birders have diminished, yet the most massive bird fallouts of the season commonly occur NOW! Flocks of sparrows, kinglets, bluebirds, American Robins and Hermit Thrushes throng the trees and meadows - and it is now that knowledgeable birders start to sift through the birds in the hope of something really special, since this week starts the season for vagrants in Cape May. It’s also a great time for big raptors like buteos and Golden Eagles, while large seabird flights pass Avalon and Cape May Point nearly every day. Most of the three days will be spent outdoors, learning directly from our field experiences and much of our time will most likely be spent at some of Cape May’s key migration locations. We don’t pre-set an itinerary but will visit those parts of Cape May County that regularly hold good numbers of birds at this time of year. This iconic urban park can work as a “migrant trap” in fall migration, with chances to see warblers and other birds up close. Explore an iconic urban park. This is the right time to discover fall migrants as they make their way south. Led by Dave Hall, Associate Naturalist Branch Brook Park is distinguished by being the first county park to be opened for public use in the United States. It has been placed on both the New Jersey (1980) and National (1981) Registers of Historic Places. Named for a branch brook that flowed through the valley into the Passaic River, the stream that remains, and much of the surrounding landscape, still retain a natural appearance. More than 4,000 cherry trees that blossom during April are greater both in variety and number than the famed Washington, D.C., display—the result of a 1927 gift from Mrs. Felix Fuld family. At its height the Cherry Blossom Festival attracts over 10,000 people a day. Join Michael O’Brien for this two-day workshop celebrating the ‘LBJs’ (little brown jobs) of the birding world. This is a workshop that celebrates the ‘LBJs’ (little brown jobs) of the birding world. Subtle and cryptic they might be; difficult to identify they are not, providing you have the right instructor, place and time. Early November at Cape May is a time when lots of sparrows of many species abound; common species like Swamp, Field, Savannah and Chipping, as well as uncommon ones like Clay-colored, Vesper, Lincoln’s, Nelson’s and Salt-marsh. Learn the first principals of size, shape and behavior, then practice examining plumage patterns to discover how stunning sparrows can be. Most of the two days will be spent outdoors, learning directly from our field experiences and much of our time will most likely be spent at some of Cape May’s key migration locations. We don’t pre-set an itinerary but will visit those parts of Cape May County that regularly hold good numbers of birds at this time of year. Final location decisions will be made by the leader, based on local knowledge and conditions at the time. We may walk up to 1.5 miles, over generally level, sometimes muddy or sandy terrain. This beautiful park can be great for a wide variety of migrant birds from shorebirds to waders, falcons, thrushes & warblers. One of the gems of the state park system, Island Beach has miles of beach, tidal wetlands, maritime forest and thickets that can host a good diversity of birds, especially if the winds are right. There is a $5 entry fee for NJ residents who do not have a state park pass or are 65 years of age or older. Be prepared for several hours of walking on flat terrain, sometimes sandy. Bring lunch. The Fall migration of seabirds along the South Jersey coast is fascinating, inspiring, and sometimes overwhelming, as hundreds of thousands head south to wintering grounds. The migration of scoters and other sea ducks, loons, cormorants and gannets can be an overwhelming sight. For example, the CMBO full-time Avalon Seawatch project sighted over one million seabirds here in 2014!
