Join Michael O’Brien for this two-day workshop celebrating the ‘LBJs’ (little brown jobs) of the birding world. This is a workshop that celebrates the ‘LBJs’ (little brown jobs) of the birding world. Subtle and cryptic they might be; difficult to identify they are not, providing you have the right instructor, place and time. Early November at Cape May is a time when lots of sparrows of many species abound; common species like Swamp, Field, Savannah and Chipping, as well as uncommon ones like Clay-colored, Vesper, Lincoln’s, Nelson’s and Salt-marsh. Learn the first principals of size, shape and behavior, then practice examining plumage patterns to discover how stunning sparrows can be. Most of the two days will be spent outdoors, learning directly from our field experiences and much of our time will most likely be spent at some of Cape May’s key migration locations. We don’t pre-set an itinerary but will visit those parts of Cape May County that regularly hold good numbers of birds at this time of year. This beautiful park can be great for a wide variety of migrant birds from shorebirds to waders, falcons, thrushes & warblers. One of the gems of the state park system, Island Beach has miles of beach, tidal wetlands, maritime forest and thickets that can host a good diversity of birds, especially if the winds are right. There is a $5 entry fee for NJ residents who do not have a state park pass or are 65 years of age or older. Be prepared for several hours of walking on flat terrain, sometimes sandy. Bring lunch. The workshop will be organized around three nature photography principles—light, composition, and moment. You will learn how to use elements of composition such as color, depth of field, lines, patterns, perspective, shapes, space, and texture. The Fall migration of seabirds along the South Jersey coast is fascinating, inspiring, and sometimes overwhelming, as hundreds of thousands head south to wintering grounds. Join us for an afternoon of scoters, gannets, loons, grebes, cormorants, jaegers, and more – a chance to learn about and appreciate these amazing movements. We’ll discuss plumage, flight style, seasonality and other aspects that affect migration. We’ll concentrate our efforts around Stone Harbor and Avalon – taking it all in. Mid-November is one of the best times to look for vagrants. Join Kathy Horn CMBO naturalists in rounding up these rarities! Cape May is well known for the sheer number of birds that migrate through each fall, but did you know it’s also a great place for unexpected species to be spotted? Mid-November is one of the best times to look for vagrants: landbird migration is still ongoing, and rarities often show up and stick around for days or even weeks. We might seek “stake-out” birds (birds previously found and staying in the same area) and search local hotspots to try to track down our own out of place birds! Late fall has featured many irruptive landbirds and we’ll seek these out as they remain available. Join us on this Special Field Trip as we try to round up as many unexpected birds as possible around the tip of the Cape May peninsula. Because of the inherent dynamic nature of birding, we do not pre-set an exact itinerary but will visit those parts of Cape May County that regularly hold good numbers of seabirds during November. This is a 2-day workshop where we will make the paper on November 18 and then use it for collage, sculpture, and/ or greeting cards on December 2. Led by Dorothy Smullen, Teacher Naturalist and former president of the New Jersey Mycological Association. This is a fun activity that has many decorative uses – making paper from just fungi and water. Only certain species of fungi are used in this process: shelf or bracket fungi that have thick cell walls made of chitin. Chitin (also found as the exoskeleton of insects and other arthropods) is a polysaccharide similar to cellulose which is used to make paper from trees. Mushrooms and fungi are in the news a lot these days concerning Medicinal's and myco-materials (fungi-leather and packaging). All materials provided. Limited to 10 participants. The migration of scoters and other sea ducks, loons, cormorants and gannets can be an overwhelming sight. Join Dave Oster at Old Bridge Waterfront Park in Laurence Harbor to bird along the waterfront for a variety of waterbirds. Old Bridge Waterfront Park preserves 71 acres of beach, dune vegetation, and wooded areas along Raritan Bay in Middlesex County. In late fall the park can be excellent for a variety of waterbirds, raptors, and hardy passerines. We'll bird the extensive waterfront for loons, grebes, sea ducks, gulls and gannets. Raptors such as Bald Eagle and Peregrine Falcon are often present. A boardwalk and paved trail run along the beach, and three jetties with level walkways offer good vantage points for scanning the bay. The dunes and wooded areas may offer some passerine surprises. While the walk is easy, please be prepared for seasonal wind and weather. Please bring your own binoculars, and spotting scope if desired. Registration required. Join Mary Watkins and CMBO Naturalists to explore Edwin B. Forsythe NWR where ducks will be massing, and raptors will be hunting! November is a great month to visit coastal South Jersey. Ducks and geese will be gathering on the back bays and saltmarshes and it’s a great time of year to be looking for the raptors that this mass of birds attracts. Conversational flocks of Brant and Snow Geese and busy parties of Northern Pintail, Northern Shoveler, American Wigeon, Buffleheads and much more will vie for our attention as we hope for views of hunting Northern Harriers, Peregrines, Bald Eagles - maybe even a Golden Eagle. We will spend part of our time at Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge, Brigantine Division, where the managed impoundments provide ideal wintering habitat for wetland birds. After birding the refuge, we will head to nearby Mott’s Creek, a regular - though not guaranteed - site for wintering Short-eared Owls and Rough-legged Hawks. Entrance to the NWR is contingent upon purchase of a $4 Refuge Pass, or possession of a Golden Age Pass or Federal Duck Stamp is required for each vehicle. You may purchase a day pass at the site We do not set a firm daily schedule in advance, leaving us flexible to maximize birding opportunities, taking advantage of weather conditions, tides, and recent bird sightings. Walk on the wild side with Lorrimer this fall as we check out our forest throughout the season.
