Join Cape May Bird Observatory naturalists on a trolley tour to local “natural habitats” (with exits at two spots), learning about the beauty, diversity, abundance (millions of birds, butterflies, and dragonflies pass through each year), geography, and extensive history of this amazing spectacle. This summer, The Wayrick Wildlife Art Gallery at the Scherman Hoffman Wildlife Sanctuary will feature an exciting new exhibit titled “Windows Into Nature” by local artist David Clair. All sale proceeds from the exhibit will be donated to NJ Audubon. As David relates “Most of the pieces in this show present landscape elements as viewed through abstract windows. The framework is usually done in acrylics and the scenes are some combination of acrylics and collage. The collage elements use magazine papers that have undergone varying degrees of solvent treatment. Using lacquer thinner the printed image can be faded or completely destroyed and the inks quickly worked into the desired texture. In turn, the resulting textures are useful in representing rock formations and foliage in landscapes as well as other textural effects for more abstract work.” David Clair has been painting since the early nineteen sixties. Since his retirement in 1990, he has had more time to pursue his art and has experimented with a variety of collage and mixed media techniques.His work has appeared in shows at the Atrium Gallery in Morristown, the Bernardsville Library, the Morris Arts Gallery, and juried exhibits at the Mountain Art Show, the Somerset Art Association and the Tewksbury Historical Society. “Windows Into Nature” is free and open to the public Wednesday - Sunday throughout the summer. Join Lorrimer Sanctuary after dark for a fascinating exploration into the world of MOTHS! There are far more species of moths than butterflies and they live fascinating lives. Learn about these important creatures and see what we catch with smelly bait and light traps. We’ll begin with a learning session before the capturing. Moth Night follows National Moth Week, held annually worldwide during the last full week of July to celebrate moth beauty, ecology and habitats. Bring a flashlight and plastic jar with a lid for catching. This is an all-ages program; children must be accompanied by an adult. Tickets must be purchased by July 31st. Expect a wide range of species from long-legged wading birds to raptors, rails, and many species of shorebirds, terns, and passerines. Common, Forster’s and Least Terns are plentiful at this time, and there may be a few Royal Terns and Black Skimmers around. Fungi have been used for thousands of years by humans, not only as food but as medicine, fire-starters, insect repellants, decoration, for religious ceremonies and more. Fungi are very important to forests. Not only are they decomposers and recyclers in the forest ecosystem, but they also connect to tree roots – a mutualistic symbiosis that might allow trees to communicate with each other. There’s arguably no better all-around summer birding spot in the state than Forsythe NWR. “Brig’s” combination of habitats, easy accessibility, and penchant for attracting rare species make this a perennial favorite. Expect a wide range of species from long-legged wading birds to raptors, rails, and many species of shorebirds, terns, and passerines. Spend two days experiencing some of the east coast's best shorebirding with Michael O'Brien, one of the authors of "The Shorebird Guide"! The Shorebird Guide, Houghton Mifflin’s landmark title on the subject, is authored by three Cape May birders and your guide for this workshop is one of them. Experience the best shorebirding on the East Coast with Michael O’Brien, equal parts skilled birder, expert guide and superb teacher. We’ll search South Jersey’s best shorebird locations in search of sandpipers, plovers, yellowlegs, and hope to find a few other gems such as phalaropes or godwits. Over 25 plover and sandpiper species are within reach, and some species number in the thousands here at this time of year. Begin learning identification by size, shape, behavior and voice, then move on to careful examination of plumage details, as The Shorebird Guide outlines. We don’t pre-set an itinerary but will visit those parts of Cape May County that regularly hold good numbers of birds at this time of year. Experience the second wave of southbound migrating shorebirds in central Delaware—a place with a different species mix than locations like Cape May or Brigantine. This two-day trip offers an excellent opportunity to study a wide variety of shorebirds, herons, and terns. Mixed species flocks of shorebirds—often at close range and in juvenile and adult plumages, provide participants with a chance to learn subtleties of sandpiper identification. Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge encompasses 15,978 acres and has one of the largest expanses of nearly unaltered salt marsh in the mid-Atlantic, plus over 1,100 acres of freshwater impoundments. We’ll complement our tour with visits to other noteworthy sites that may include Little Creek WMA, Port Mahon, and Woodland Beach WMA, dependent current water levels. This trip should tally 20+ species of shorebirds (often including several hundred American Avocets), large numbers of long-legged waders, and other surprises. Species we should encounter include American Avocet, Black-necked Stilt, Western Sandpiper, White-rumped Sandpiper, Stilt Sandpiper, Long-billed Dowitcher, Caspian and Black Terns. We could see some less-common to rare shorebirds like Hudsonian and Marbled Godwits, Buff-breasted Sandpiper, Baird’s Sandpiper, and Wilson’s Phalarope. The area is a magnet for rare birds as well, with past trips recording goodies like White Ibis, White-faced Ibis, Curlew Sandpiper, Red-necked Phalarope, Black-headed Gull, Scissor-tailed Flycatcher, and Sedge Wren. We may have to bird in the rain, so please bring your rain gear. TRANSPORTATION: We may walk up to 1.5 miles, over generally level, sometimes muddy or sandy terrain. Some trips involve walks over jetties. CANCELLATION: NJ Audubon’s CMBO programs are virtually never cancelled. If we cancel, due to lack of participation, severe weather, or unforeseen circumstances, all participants will be notified as soon as possible and are eligible for a full refund. Participants may cancel without penalty if greater than 48 hours in advance. Sorry, no refund for cancellations less than 48 hours in advance unless due to health emergencies; however, registrations can be transferred to another program in the future.

There’s arguably no better all-around summer birding spot in the state than Forsythe NWR. “Brig’s” combination of habitats, easy accessibility, and penchant for attracting rare species make this a perennial favorite. Expect a wide range of species from long-legged wading birds to raptors, rails, and many species of shorebirds, terns, and passerines. Each week is likely to be different as we watch the ebb and flow of summer migration. Led by Scott Barnes, Linda Mack, Carole Hughes, Mike Mandracchia, Jason Denesevich and/or Chris Daly. Join Captain Bob and the crew of The Osprey for close-up looks at secretive rails, nesting Ospreys, migrant shorebirds, terns, gulls, herons and more. We explore the coastal saltmarsh of Cape May from Cape Island Creek to the Wildwoods and view the natural wonders of historic Cape May Harbor. The Osprey is a 37' pontoon boat that has a comfortable enclosed cabin with large viewing windows, a front deck with a railing, and a restroom on board. Non-motorized wheelchair accessible.
