The Beanery provided some surprises on this morning’s field trip. We watched a near-adult Bald Eagle chase an Osprey, hoping to make it drop its fish; they repeatedly wheeled across the sky together before the eagle gave up and drifted away. We also had some interesting sparrows popping up and down along a close fence row. A first-winter White-crowned Sparrow gave us great views as it perched on top of the fence and a Savannah Sparrow, a Field and a Chipping Sparrow in juvenile plumage also perched up for comparisons. We initially called the Chipping Sparrow as a Clay-colored Sparrow; in juvenile plumage, the two can be difficult to distinguish. But the gray rump and pale lores were enough to confirm this bird as a streaky first-winter chipping sparrow.
