We’ll search for nesting grassland birds including Grasshopper Sparrow at this hidden gem. This restored grassland hosts a good variety of breeding species including American Kestrel, Black-billed Cuckoo, Grasshopper Sparrow, Orchard Oriole, and Blue Grosbeak. Be prepared for three hours of walking over flat terrain. We’ll also spend a little time looking at butterflies and dragonflies. There are no restrooms on site. From common garden weeds to well-known ornamental plants to native forest plants, this walk features something for everyone! Head out on a guided tour through our trails, where you'll encounter a variety of fascinating poisonous plants that have. Our knowledgeable staff will share anecdotes and cautionary tales about these cool (and occasionally sinister!) plants. Discover the secrets behind well-known plants like Foxglove, Bleeding Heart, and Nightshade as well as their less well-known peers! Writing Nature (Session 1): Watery World
Celebrate your inner poet with Cape May's Poet Laureate, Sylvia Baer! These workshops will focus on using the natural world as a "springboard" for writing poetry. We will explore and "play with" several different poetic forms including sonnets, villanelles, and free-verse. And we will use the wonderful resources and views afforded us at our extraordinary venue. No experience is necessary and no one will be required to share any writing. Each session will focus on different elements and be independent of each other. Sylvia Baer who is a teacher, poet, storyteller, and translator has lived in many countries and speaks several languages. She has been teaching English Literature for over 50 years and has created creative writing programs and publications and been the founding editor of several national academic publications. She is a graduate of Northfield School (now NMH), Washington College (BA and MA) and The University of Maryland (PhD), an Associate Fellow of Yale University (Davenport), and was recently named the Poet Laureate of Cape May, NJ, where you can visit her Poet-Tree. NEW 2024! The Ocean City Welcome Center has become a must-see breeding bird destination. Join our Volunteer Naturalists for great views of nesting wading birds, including Great Blue and Little Blue herons, Yellow-crowned and Black-crowned night-herons, Great and Snowy egrets, Glossy and White ibis - all building and sitting on nests. The raised parking lot of the Welcome Center provides very close views of the birds, so be sure to bring your camera to try to capture some amazing photos! The group will spend time viewing these birds from the bridge overlook, as well as taking a short walk underneath the bridge to view the birds at eye level. Our Naturalists will provide scopes for participants, but bringing your own scope is encouraged. PREREGISTRATION REQUIRED. Evening birding at the refuge looking for waders, late shorebirds, and marsh birds. We'll finish by listening for nightjars & owls. We’ll do a leisurely spin around the wildlife drive looking for late shorebirds, breeding species including Clapper Rail, herons, egrets, Seaside and Saltmarsh Sparrows and finish the trip by listening for Chuck-will’s-widow and Eastern Whip-poor-will. Celebrate your inner poet with Cape May's Poet Laureate, Sylvia Baer! These workshops will focus on using the natural world as a "springboard" for writing poetry. We will explore and "play with" several different poetic forms including sonnets, villanelles, and free-verse. And we will use the wonderful resources and views afforded us at our extraordinary venue. No experience is necessary and no one will be required to share any writing. Each session will focus on different elements and be independent of each other. Sylvia Baer who is a teacher, poet, storyteller, and translator has lived in many countries and speaks several languages. She has been teaching English Literature for over 50 years and has created creative writing programs and publications and been the founding editor of several national academic publications. She is a graduate of Northfield School (now NMH), Washington College (BA and MA) and The University of Maryland (PhD), an Associate Fellow of Yale University (Davenport), and was recently named the Poet Laureate of Cape May, NJ, where you can visit her Poet-Tree. Join our Volunteer Naturalists for great views of nesting wading birds, including Great Blue and Little Blue herons, Yellow-crowned and Black-crowned night-herons, Great and Snowy egrets, Glossy and White ibis - all building and sitting on nests. The raised parking lot of the Welcome Center provides very close views of the birds, so be sure to bring your camera to try to capture some amazing photos! The group will spend time viewing these birds from the bridge overlook, as well as taking a short walk underneath the bridge to view the birds at eye level. Join our Volunteer Naturalists for great views of nesting wading birds, including Great Blue and Little Blue herons, Yellow-crowned and Black-crowned night-herons, Great and Snowy egrets, Glossy and White ibis - all building and sitting on nests. The raised parking lot of the Welcome Center provides very close views of the birds, so be sure to bring your camera to try to capture some amazing photos! The group will spend time viewing these birds from the bridge overlook, as well as taking a short walk underneath the bridge to view the birds at eye level. Join our Volunteer Naturalists for great views of nesting wading birds, including Great Blue and Little Blue herons, Yellow-crowned and Black-crowned night-herons, Great and Snowy egrets, Glossy and White ibis - all building and sitting on nests. The raised parking lot of the Welcome Center provides very close views of the birds, so be sure to bring your camera to try to capture some amazing photos! The group will spend time viewing these birds from the bridge overlook, as well as taking a short walk underneath the bridge to view the birds at eye level. Take a break from your busy day for a relaxing, nature-infused yoga practice. This is a gentle, all levels class led by owner of Itswell Yoga, Emily Reed. Nature-based poetry and metaphors will be woven throughout each session. NEW 2024! The Ocean City Welcome Center has become a must-see breeding bird destination. Join our Volunteer Naturalists for great views of nesting wading birds, including Great Blue and Little Blue herons, Yellow-crowned and Black-crowned night-herons, Great and Snowy egrets, Glossy and White ibis - all building and sitting on nests. The raised parking lot of the Welcome Center provides very close views of the birds, so be sure to bring your camera to try to capture some amazing photos! The group will spend time viewing these birds from the bridge overlook, as well as taking a short walk underneath the bridge to view the birds at eye level. Our Naturalists will provide scopes for participants, but bringing your own scope is encouraged. PREREGISTRATION REQUIRED. Notes: The Welcome Center exit takes you into Ocean City. Once in town you can go around a block to get back onto the outbound road. Gnats may be a problem.
