Woodcock return to Franklin Township in late winter or early spring to mate and nest. Males of the species begin calling and performing an aerial courtship-display-flight when the afternoon shadows are almost gone. Please dress for the weather, and preferably wear boots. The “shoulder season” in Cape May is a wonderful time for birding and there’s no better place to do it than the Cape May Point State Park. With its diversity of habitat – beach, dunes, ponds, forest, and marsh – it’s the perfect spot for migrating waterfowl, songbirds and shorebirds to stop and refuel as the push of spring migration begins. We’ll travel the trails, check out CMBO’s Northwood Center and other surrounding hotspots on The Point, as we soak up the wonder of this annual phenomenon of Nature. Join us every Saturday for 2 hours of birding at the Cape May Point State Park and let us share with you the wonder of this special time of year. These reservoirs can host lots of geese, ducks, and gulls. We'll also search nearby uplands for field and forest birds. These reservoirs are known for a variety of wintering waterfowl and up to 7 species of gulls, including some of the highest counts of Lesser Black-backed Gulls in North America. We’ll also bird the surrounding parks’ upland habitats for other wintering species like raptors and songbirds. Expect to walk 3-4 miles on well-defined trails and paths. Led by Alan Mart. There’s something about the peculiar, crepuscular ‘peeent’ of a woodcock that captures the imagination. It’s such a distinctive sound of spring, yet many people hear it and never find out what it is! This program begins with an indoor session at The Sperlak Gallery & Sculpture Garden, a working farm, studio, and nature sanctuary of artist Stan Sperlak. The indoor presentation will be delivered by Tom Reed, CMBO’s Migration Monitoring Coordinator, and will focus on the life of the American Woodcock in Cape May County. Following the presentation, everyone will be invited to enjoy a spread of hors d’oeuvres and local wine, before heading outside with Tom to try to spot this enigmatic bird. The inlets and ponds in this area can be great for a variety of waterbirds including ducks, loons, gulls and some spring migrants. The "north shore" between Point Pleasant Beach and Belmar can make for great winter birding. We'll search the inlets, ponds, and oceanfront for a variety of ducks, loons, gulls, and more. In some years Razorbills or other rarer alcids may be present, and the tour can be good for "white-winged" gulls. Meet at the east end of Broadway in Point Pleasant Beach. Bring binoculars, spotting scope if you have one, and lunch. Dress warmly. This trip requires little walking. Led by Scott Barnes and Carole Hughes. This rich salt marsh is one of the best spots to observe hunting and breeding birds of all shapes and sizes. Our group will be scanning the crowded mudflats for Clapper Rails, American Oystercatchers, and a wide variety of migrant shorebirds. Ospreys, Black Skimmers, herons, egrets, and terns are often seen putting on a show while hunting along the island. Breeding Seaside Sparrows and wrens can also be heard from this same location! Depending on the weather, as well as the arrival and dispersal of these species, the group may also travel to Stone Harbor Point, The Wetlands Institute, and various locations in North Wildwood. Join Kevin Karlson to learn the easy way to separate the four common winter gulls and practice sifting flocks of gulls for something rare. Gulls are an interesting lot; as a group they can be found on every continent around the world, yet there is a tendency for them to be, well, a little ‘samey’! In this workshop, we aim to spend time focusing on the four regular, wintering species in Cape May - Herring, Great Black-backed, Ring-billed and Bonaparte’s; in the process, we will practice “sifting flocks” for rarer gulls. Perhaps we’ll see an Iceland Gull or other unusual species, or perhaps the season’s first Laughing Gull will wend its way northward past us. As well as considering identification, we’ll also help to demystify the fancy terminology surrounding age, plumage and condition of molt, useful considerations when working through a seemingly bewildering group. There will be a1-hr indoor session before the group heads out into the field. We don’t pre-set an itinerary but will explore those parts of Cape May County that regularly hold good numbers of gulls, such as Cape May Point, Cape May Harbor and the Cape May Ferry Terminal area. Late winter birding at one of the state's best hotspots. Expect good numbers of ducks, geese, and swans, plus eagles and other raptors. This can be an excellent time of year at “Brig,” when eagles and other raptors are in evidence, plus large numbers of geese and ducks. We may also find sparrows and other songbirds along the dikes and keep our eyes out for secretive marsh birds like American Bittern and rails. Bring lunch and weather appropriate clothing. This rich salt marsh is one of the best spots to observe hunting and breeding birds of all shapes and sizes. Our group will be scanning the crowded mudflats for Clapper Rails, American Oystercatchers, and a wide variety of migrant shorebirds. Ospreys, Black Skimmers, herons, egrets, and terns are often seen putting on a show while hunting along the island. Breeding Seaside Sparrows and wrens can also be heard from this same location! Depending on the weather, as well as the arrival and dispersal of these species, the group may also travel to Stone Harbor Point, The Wetlands Institute, and various locations in North Wildwood. Early spring birding for loons, grebes, gulls, & migrants. If winds are right, we could have a modest hawk flight. Raritan Bay Waterfront Park has long been known as a concentration point for Bonaparte's Gulls in spring. If we're lucky a Little Gull or Black-headed Gull could be among them. The bay usually hosts a variety of waterbirds in early spring and some landbird migrants could be around. Once you enter the park, go north and park at the end of the lot close to the bay.
