Happy New Birding Year! Time to kick-off your yearly birding list with Program Coordinator Adehl Schwaderer and CMBO Naturalists! Let’s be honest, this is simply a day of pure, unadulterated fun! Birders love to keep lists of what they see and, perhaps, the most frequently kept list is the year list - a tally of all those species seen over the course of a single calendar year. January 1st gives us a great opportunity to start our New Year with a great day out in Cape May County, exploring hidden corners as well as well-known locations, and covering a range of habitats. We'll visit multiple locations and hotspots, including the Cape May Point State Park and the Nature Conservancy's South Cape May Meadows. We are scheduled to end at 5:00 p.m., but there may be optional birding opportunities later into the evening. We do not set a firm daily schedule in advance, leaving us flexible to maximize birding opportunities, taking advantage of weather conditions, tides and recent bird sightings. Final location decisions will be made by the leader based on local knowledge and conditions at the time. We will break for an hour or so for lunch and to warm up. Join CMBO Director Brett Ewald for a two-day winter birding workshop exploring all Cape May County has to offer! Southern NJ provides incredible winter birding! With over ten species of diurnal raptors (hawks and owls) and twenty-five species of waterfowl possible, there is so much to see and appreciate, set in some of the most beautiful and remote landscapes on the Eastern Seaboard. While we’ll focus on these groups of birds, we’ll also take time to enjoy shorebirds, gulls, gannets, sparrows are more on this in-the-field workshop. Past years have featured Rough-legged Hawks, Short-eared Owls, and eiders. We don’t pre-set an itinerary, but will explore parts of Cape May County, Forsythe NWR (Atlantic County), and the Delaware Bayshore northward into Cumberland County, depending on weather conditions, tide times and sightings reports. Join Chris Marks, Dave & Lynn Pollard and CMBO Naturalists, as we explore some of the iconic barrier islands in Cape May County. These long and narrow land strips are teeming with a variety of birds. For this trip, we’ll spend the majority of our time on Seven-Mile Island, home to the boroughs of Stone Harbor and Avalon as well as amazing ocean views, dunes, and marshes. As we walk the beach at Stone Harbor Point, we’ll look for wintering shorebirds, gulls, and sparrows. The Avalon jetty is a great spot to try for winter goodies such as Great Cormorant and Purple Sandpiper as well as migrating scoters, loons, and other waterfowl. We may also try for salty sparrows such as Nelson’s and Saltmarsh Sparrow on Nummy Island. We do not set a firm daily schedule in advance, leaving us flexible to maximize birding opportunities, taking advantage of weather conditions, tides, and recent bird sightings. Join CMBO Naturalists to explore Edwin B. Forsythe NWR where ducks will be massing, and raptors will be hunting! January is a great month to visit coastal South Jersey. Ducks and geese will be massed on the back bays and saltmarshes and it’s the best time of year to be looking for the raptors that this mass of birds attracts. Conversational flocks of Brant and Snow Geese and busy parties of Northern Pintail, Northern Shoveler, American Wigeon, Buffleheads and much more will vie for our attention as we hope for views of hunting Northern Harriers, Peregrines, Bald Eagles - maybe even a Rough-legged Hawk. We will aim to spend much of our time at Brigantine, where the managed impoundments provide ideal wintering habitat for wetland birds, then later move on to Mott’s Creek, a regular - though not guaranteed - site for wintering Short-eared Owls. Entrance to the NWR is contingent upon purchase of a $4 Refuge Pass, or possession of a Golden Age Pass or Federal Duck Stamp is required for each vehicle. You may purchase a day pass at the site. Led by Scott Barnes and Sean McLaughlin This tour focuses on owls, boreal birds, and winter finches with four full days of birding and is based from a lakefront hotel in Duluth. While nowhere near the top of the average traveler’s list of winter destinations, Northeast Minnesota offers a remarkable amount of excitement for any birder at this season. The lively port cities of Duluth and Superior, Lake Superior’s picturesque North Shore, the famous Sax-Zim Bog, and the vast Superior National Forest all come together to present a unique blend of wildlife and general experiences that are not to be missed! Given the cyclical and irruptive nature of many of the birds we seek in these northern environs, the “list of possibilities” will be slightly different winter-to-winter and sometimes even month-to-month. Species we hope to find on this short tour include Great Gray, Snowy, and Northern Hawk owls, Spruce, Sharp-tailed, and Ruffed grouse, Canada Jay, Black-backed Woodpecker, Common Redpoll, Pine and Evening Grosbeaks, Boreal Chickadee, Northern Shrike, Black-billed Magpie, and Red or White-winged Crossbills. Rarer species that occasionally appear here include American Three-toed Woodpecker, Boreal Owl, Townsend’s Solitaire, Harlequin Duck, and Gyrfalcon. Mammals can also be a highlight, with possibilities including Porcupine, Snowshoe Hare, Pine Marten, Ermine, and if we’re very lucky – Moose, Gray Wolf, or Canada Lynx. GROUP SIZE: Travel during this tour will be in a passenger van with no more than 7 participants plus the leader. A second vehicle may take up to 5 participants and leader. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Easy to Moderate We will typically leave our hotel around 6-6:30 am, depending on how far we intend to travel to reach our first stop of the day. Sunrise is around 7:30am with sunset around 5:30pm here during late January, meaning days in the field will never be extremely long. Temperatures generally range from 0-30ºF but can potentially be a bit lower or higher than this at times; effects from windchill can be a concern in more open areas. Being prepared for the cold is key! Snow and sleet are the most likely precipitation types to be encountered. There will be extended time spent in the tour vehicles, with a couple of longer (~2 hour) drives possible. MEETING LOCATION: The tour begins and ends at our hotel in the Canal Park section of Duluth, Minnesota. TOUR PRICE: $3,295 based on double occupancy. Single supplement $300. Tour price includes transportation in Minnesota, 5 nights lodging, all entrance fees, and leadership. It does not include meals. A deposit of $500 will hold your space until November 30, 2026 when full payment is due. PROVISIONAL ITINERARY: Day 1: Arrival to Duluth during afternoon. Arrangements for transportation to hotel, or participants with own transportation can go birding in the immediate Duluth area. Group meets at hotel at 6:00pm for introductions and then dinner.
