Ellen Moskowitz, Jack Moskowitz, Becky Witt, Phil Witt, Cathy DesRochers, and David DesRochers volunteer their time each month to teach digital photography classes at Scherman Hoffman. Beyond the charming Victorian homes and sandy beaches, Cape May is world famous for its birdwatching, monarch migration, and natural history. Join Cape May Bird Observatory staff and naturalists on a trolley tour to local “natural habitats” (with exits at two spots), learning about the beauty, diversity, abundance (millions of birds, butterflies, and dragonflies pass through each year), geography, and extensive history of this amazing spectacle. What treasures does the sea leave behind at the water’s edge? Join us for an hour of beach combing to find out! Explore one of the area’s ever-changing coastal habitats - the beach, ocean, and dunes of Cape May’s “The Cove” beach. We’ll scour the shallows, comb the shoreline, and walk along the dunes in search of hidden treasures & signs of wildlife. Summer birding at one of the state's best hotspots. Expect shorebirds, wading birds, terns, marsh birds, and raptors. There’s arguably no better all-around summer birding spot in the state than Forsythe NWR. “Brig’s” combination of habitats, easy accessibility, and penchant for attracting rare species make this a perennial favorite. Expect a wide range of species from long-legged wading birds to raptors, rails, and many species of shorebirds, terns, and passerines. Each week is likely to be different as we watch the ebb and flow of summer migration. An enchanting introduction to wild herbal teas! Step into the woods as a forager, not just a hiker. In this hands-on program guests will explore the forest floor and trail edges and learn to spot and safely identify wild plants that have been brewed into teas for generations — things like pine needles, wild mint, clover, etc., depending on the season and location. We'll then head back into the education center for some taste-testing. What to expect: A guided walk to search for edible, tea-worthy plants Simple, memorable rules for foraging safely (only pick what you can positively identify; leave enough for the forest and other foragers) A tasting session — sipping the tea you helped find, with time to talk about flavor, smell, and which plants tasted best Take-home tips and recipes for continuing to forage safely and brew your own teas. Our time will largely be spent getting to know the great wealth of warblers, flycatchers, vireos and other migratory songbirds that pause at Cape May during their southward migration at this time of year. This migration is very much weather-dependent, so there are no guarantees on what we may see, but it is pretty certain that each day will be very different to the last, creating a wonderful atmosphere of intrigue and an element of the unknown. While songbirds will be a major focus for us, we shall also spend time sampling the shorebirds, seabirds and raptors that also pass through at this time. Most of the three days will be spent outdoors, learning directly from our field experiences and much of our time will most likely be spent at some of Cape May’s key migration locations. We don’t pre-set an itinerary but will visit those parts of Cape May County that regularly hold good numbers of birds at this time of year. Join Captain Bob and the crew of The Osprey for close-up looks at secretive rails, nesting Ospreys, migrant shorebirds, terns, gulls, herons and more. We explore the coastal saltmarsh of Cape May from Cape Island Creek to the Wildwoods and view the natural wonders of historic Cape May Harbor. Join CMBO Staff at the Cape May Point State Park, home of the Cape May Hawkwatch, to watch migratory raptors. We’ll learn about raptor identification, the weather conditions that favor the passage of many bird species, tips on picking up distant flocks of hawks and other migrants, and more. We’ll also be sure to check Bunker Pond and other habitats close to the Hawkwatch for any other interesting fall migrants. After about two hours on the Hawkwatch, we will join the Monarch Monitoring Staff for a Monarch Tagging Demonstration to understand monarch ecology, migration, and the work we are doing to help conserve this incredible species. Recommended age for field trip: 8 years old and up. Parents or guardians are required to accompany their children during this program at no additional charge. Explore one of the area’s ever-changing coastal habitats - the beach, ocean, and dunes of Cape May’s “The Cove” beach. Migration is the time of the highest bird diversity, and we expect to see or hear 30 – 40 or more bird species. Join CMBO Director Brett Ewald and CMBO Naturalists for this workshop. Bird the “raptor capital of North America” at the peak of diversity. Bird the “raptor capital of North America” at the peak of diversity, when falcons are zipping along the dunes, accipiters are flap, flap, flapping by, buteos are soaring overhead, and eagles are chasing Ospreys. Early October often produces flights in the thousands and is the peak time for Peregrine Falcons and others. It is a rare moment during October in Cape May when raptors are not in view and this concentration of birds should ensure that we almost always have something to look at. Learn how to tell buteos from accipiters, falcons from eagles, at the very edge of your eyesight or right overhead, and focus on tricky species-pairs, such as the many ways to tell Sharp-shinned from Cooper’s Hawks. We’ll visit areas around Cape May to make the most of your raptor watching on this “in the field” workshop. We’ll also be in a prime location to enjoy other migrants, such as shorebirds, late warblers, early sparrows, and more! Because of the inherent dynamic nature of birding, we do not pre-set an exact itinerary but will visit those parts of Cape May County that regularly hold good numbers of birds. What is a Little Sit? A spin on the annual, international birding event The Big Sit, this event takes that idea and slows it down. Join the Nature Conservancy and the Cape May Bird Observatory staff for a fun, educational challenge to see how many birds we can identify from one location. In the fall, South Cape May Meadows is the perfect location to see migrating shorebirds, songbirds and raptors. As a part of this event, we will have benches for sitting, binoculars and spotting scopes for viewing, and educational materials to assist with bird identification. No matter your level of birding experience, you are welcome to help us add to our morning species total!! An ASL interpreter will be provided for this event. Led by Kristen Mylecraine, Yoga Teacher and NJ Audubon Senior Research Scientist Yoga is a great way to relax, connect with yourself, and increase flexibility and strength. Explore the connections between yoga and nature in this 75-minute class. No experience necessary; all levels welcome. Please arrive 10 minutes early and bring a yoga mat. For ages 15 years and older. This workshop will be held outdoors when the weather is suitable. During inclement weather it will be held indoors. Ticket sale ends on the day of each class at 4:30 PM. We are offering an in-person class at the sanctuary and a virtual class online simultaneously. Be sure to purchase the correct ticket. There will be no classes 09/05/26 & 11/28/26. Native trees, shrubs and wildflowers will be available for sale during our annual Fall Native Plant Sale at the Scherman Hoffman Nature Center! Native plants benefit pollinators, such as bees and hummingbirds, and the caterpillars upon which both resident and migratory birds depend. Help create the habitat that is needed to attract wildlife to your backyard. Fall is the perfect time to plant perennials, shrubs and trees in order to give plants time to establish roots before the ground freezes, so that they are ready to flower and leaf out the following year. Some of the trees that will be available for sale include Common pawpaw, Eastern redbud and Common persimmon. Shrubs that will be available include Sweet pepperbush, American witch-hazel, Winterberry, Spicebush, Pussy willow, Elderberry, Steeplebush and Highbush blueberry. Flowering perennials that will be available include Swamp milkweed, Purple coneflower, Black-eyed Susan, Wild ginger, Butterfly weed, and Cardinal flower. We will have Cinnamon fern available, as well as Trumpet vine, and many other species. Come early to find the plant that you are looking for.

Join Captain Bob and the crew of The Osprey for close-up looks at secretive rails, nesting Ospreys, migrant shorebirds, terns, gulls, herons and more. We explore the coastal saltmarsh of Cape May from Cape Island Creek to the Wildwoods and view the natural wonders of historic Cape May Harbor. The Osprey is a 37' pontoon boat that has a comfortable enclosed cabin with large viewing windows, a front deck with a railing, and a restroom on board. Non-motorized wheelchair accessible. Join CMBO naturalists for this 2-hour walk around the Cape May Point State Park! The afternoon hawk flight is often strong, with late day movements of falcons. The migration of scoters and other sea ducks, loons, cormorants and gannets can be an overwhelming sight. For example, the CMBO full-time Avalon Seawatch project sighted over one million seabirds here in 2014! Join CMBO interpretive naturalists for this outdoor workshop to witness and learn about this migration spectacle.
