We will read books, explore nature with hands-on sensory activities, and have fun! This program is best suited for children 18 months - 3.5 years old. New Jersey Audubon’s Stewardship Department is partnering with local organizations and federal agencies to bring you a 2026 Working Lands for Wildlife informational webinar series! Download the informational flyer HERE Each Wednesday this online series will focus on key species and their habitats that we are working to conserve across the landscape including American Black Duck, Bog Turtle, Northern Bobwhite (quail) and associated species, and Golden Wing Warbler. Local professionals from Natural Resources Conservation Service, US Fish and Wildlife Service, Ducks Unlimited, Xerces Society and New Jersey Audubon will present on a rotating list of topics. It is free to attend and will take place Wednesdays at 7pm EST from January 28th-March 4th. Experience Open Air / Open Space, a juried art exhibit celebrating Somerset County's Open Space Preservation Program, featured in the Wayrick Art Gallery on the 2nd floor of the Scherman Hoffman Nature Center from February 6 through March 25. This special exhibition showcases the unique beauty of Somerset County's extensive public park system through the perspectives of both professional and novice New Jersey Plein Air artists. Sponsored by the Somerset County Board of County Commissioners, Somerset County Park Commission, Somerset County Open Space Preservation Program, and Somerset County Cultural & Heritage Commission, the exhibit honors the county's long-standing commitment to preserving land for conservation, passive use, and active recreation. The inlets and ponds in this area can be great for a variety of winter birds including ducks, loons, gulls and maybe alcids. The "north shore" between Point Pleasant Beach and Belmar can make for great winter birding. We'll search the inlets, ponds, and oceanfront for a variety of ducks, loons, gulls, and more. In some years Razorbills or other rarer alcids may be present, and the tour can be good for "white-winged" gulls. Meet at the east end of Broadway in Point Pleasant Beach. Bring binoculars, spotting scope if you have one, and lunch. Dress warmly. This trip requires little walking. Led by Scott Barnes and Associate Naturalists. PRE-REGISTRATION REQUIRED COST: $25 Members, $30 Non-members WEATHER & TRANSPORTATION: Please arrive at the appointed time. Join CMBO naturalists for 2 hours of birding around beautiful Cape May Point! Crossbills, siskins, redpolls – oh, my! Winter can be such a special time to bird Cape May Point. Each week we’ll scour the Park or wander the streets to see what avian visitors are calling Cape May Point their winter home. The winter finch prediction sounds promising, the ponds are full of ducks, and loons and scoters are on the move. Our path may take us through the quiet streets of Cape May Point, visiting local feeders. Or maybe we’ll travel along the dunes to check the morning flight line. Lily Lake and the Northwood Center often hold wintering songbirds and, of course, the State Park is always good. Subjects covered include equipment, planning, composition, and capture. In addition, the program will cover photo editing techniques used to process landscape images using Adobe Camera RAW, Photoshop, and NIK Plug Ins. Join Program Coordinator Adehl Schwaderer and CMBO naturalists on a search for wintering waterfowl from Avalon to Cape May! February is a wonderful time of year to seek out various species of waterfowl, as lingering winterers are joined by northbound migrants. We will travel through coastal and inland areas of Cape May County to find and enjoy a wide range of species, including scoters, mergansers, eiders, and many other ducks, plus a great array of shorebirds, cormorants, grebes. At each stop, we will take time to study various identification clues: plumage, size & shape, flight characteristics, and behavior to help improve your bird identification skills. This birding break has something to offer birders of all skill and experience levels. We do not set a firm daily schedule in advance, leaving us flexible to maximize birding opportunities, taking advantage of weather conditions, tides, and recent bird sightings. We may walk up to 1.5 miles, over generally level, sometimes muddy or sandy terrain. Some trips involve walks over jetties. Join New Jersey Audubon Staff and Volunteers at Barnegat Light State Park for the chance to see various overwintering bird species! Barnegat Inlet is one of the best places to see beautiful Harlequin Ducks in the state, along with other sea ducks, loons, grebes, and Purple Sandpipers. We will also be on the lookout for more uncommon species in the Inlet, like Black-legged Kittiwakes or Razorbills. We will be walking most of the day. We will take a walk on the long stone walkway near the inlet or along a sandy beach. Our route will depend on the weather on the day of the trip. Time and weather permitting, we may look for Short-eared Owls and other birds at nearby marshes later in the day. We do not set a firm daily schedule in advance, leaving us flexible to maximize birding opportunities, taking advantage of weather conditions, tides, and recent bird sightings. We may walk up to 1.5 miles, over generally level, sometimes muddy or sandy terrain. Recommended age for field trip: 8 years old and up. Each week we’ll scour the Park or wander the streets to see what avian visitors are calling Cape May Point their winter home. The winter finch prediction sounds promising, the ponds are full of ducks, and loons and scoters are on the move. Our path may take us through the quiet streets of Cape May Point, visiting local feeders. Or maybe we’ll travel along the dunes to check the morning flight line. February is a wonderful time of year to seek out various species of waterfowl, as lingering winterers are joined by northbound migrants. Calling all future naturalists! Join us at the Nature Center of Cape May for a nature-inspired “Grown-up & Me” program. We will read books, explore nature with hands-on sensory activities, and have fun! This program is best suited for children 18 months - 3.5 years old. We will be exploring nature hands-on; children may get wet and/or dirty. Weather permitting, we may spend a portion of this program outside. Please dress accordingly. Registration is required. An adult must accompany children. New Jersey Audubon’s Stewardship Department is partnering with local organizations and federal agencies to bring you a 2026 Working Lands for Wildlife informational webinar series! Download the informational flyer HERE Each Wednesday this online series will focus on key species and their habitats that we are working to conserve across the landscape including American Black Duck, Bog Turtle, Northern Bobwhite (quail) and associated species, and Golden Wing Warbler. Local professionals from Natural Resources Conservation Service, US Fish and Wildlife Service, Ducks Unlimited, Xerces Society and New Jersey Audubon will present on a rotating list of topics. It is free to attend and will take place Wednesdays at 7pm EST from January 28th-March 4th. Led by Chris and Paula Williams, NJ Audubon Associate Naturalists. The American Woodcock, a long-billed woodland bird, probes in soft wet soil of wetlands and eats its weight in worms each day. Woodcock return to Franklin Township in late winter or early spring to mate and nest. Males of the species begin calling and performing an aerial courtship-display-flight when the afternoon shadows are almost gone. Please dress for the weather, and preferably wear boots. Join Dave & Lynn Pollard and CMBO Naturalists, as we explore some of the iconic barrier islands in Cape May County! These long and narrow land strips are teeming with a variety of birds. For this trip, we’ll spend the majority of our time on Seven Mile Island, home to the boroughs of Stone Harbor and Avalon as well as amazing ocean views, dunes, and marshes. As we walk the beach at Stone Harbor Point, we’ll look for wintering shorebirds, gulls, and sparrows. The Avalon jetty is a great spot to try for winter goodies such as Great Cormorant and Purple Sandpiper as well as migrating scoters, loons, and other waterfowl. We may also try for salty sparrows such as Nelson’s and Saltmarsh Sparrow on Nummy Island. We do not set a firm daily schedule in advance, leaving us flexible to maximize birding opportunities, taking advantage of weather conditions, tides, and recent bird sightings. Join CMBO naturalists for 2 hours of birding around beautiful Cape May Point! Crossbills, siskins, redpolls – oh, my! Winter can be such a special time to bird Cape May Point. Each week we’ll scour the Park or wander the streets to see what avian visitors are calling Cape May Point their winter home. The winter finch prediction sounds promising, the ponds are full of ducks, and loons and scoters are on the move. Our path may take us through the quiet streets of Cape May Point, visiting local feeders. Or maybe we’ll travel along the dunes to check the morning flight line. Lily Lake and the Northwood Center often hold wintering songbirds and, of course, the State Park is always good.
