Beyond the charming Victorian homes and sandy beaches, Cape May is world famous for its birdwatching, monarch migration, and natural history. Join Cape May Bird Observatory staff and naturalists on a trolley tour to local “natural habitats” (with exits at two spots), learning about the beauty, diversity, abundance (millions of birds, butterflies, and dragonflies pass through each year), geography, and extensive history of this amazing spectacle. Summer birding at one of the state's best hotspots. Expect shorebirds, wading birds, terns, marsh birds, and raptors. There’s arguably no better all-around summer birding spot in the state than Forsythe NWR. “Brig’s” combination of habitats, easy accessibility, and penchant for attracting rare species make this a perennial favorite. Expect a wide range of species from long-legged wading birds to raptors, rails, and many species of shorebirds, terns, and passerines. Each week is likely to be different as we watch the ebb and flow of summer migration. Location: 800 Great Creek Road, Oceanville, Forsythe NWR at main lot by headquarters. wear long pants and a lightweight long-sleeved shirt. Insect repellant is advised. Bring lunch. Migration is the time of the highest bird diversity, and we expect to see or hear 30 – 40 or more bird species. Join Louise Zemaitis for this three-day birding workshop exploring Cape May’s September bird migration! September straddles the migratory timetable – not too late for shorebirds, not too early for hawks, and right on time for Neotropical songbird migrants. Our time will largely be spent getting to know the great wealth of warblers, flycatchers, vireos and other migratory songbirds that pause at Cape May during their southward migration at this time of year. This migration is very much weather-dependent, so there are no guarantees on what we may see, but it is pretty certain that each day will be very different to the last, creating a wonderful atmosphere of intrigue and an element of the unknown. While songbirds will be a major focus for us, we shall also spend time sampling the shorebirds, seabirds and raptors that also pass through at this time. Most of the three days will be spent outdoors, learning directly from our field experiences and much of our time will most likely be spent at some of Cape May’s key migration locations. We don’t pre-set an itinerary but will visit those parts of Cape May County that regularly hold good numbers of birds at this time of year. Join CMBO Staff at the Cape May Point State Park, home of the Cape May Hawkwatch, to watch migratory raptors. We’ll learn about raptor identification, the weather conditions that favor the passage of many bird species, tips on picking up distant flocks of hawks and other migrants, and more. We’ll also be sure to check Bunker Pond and other habitats close to the Hawkwatch for any other interesting fall migrants. Join CMBO Director Brett Ewald and CMBO Naturalists for this workshop. Bird the “raptor capital of North America” at the peak of diversity. Bird the “raptor capital of North America” at the peak of diversity, when falcons are zipping along the dunes, accipiters are flap, flap, flapping by, buteos are soaring overhead, and eagles are chasing Ospreys. Early October often produces flights in the thousands and is the peak time for Peregrine Falcons and others. It is a rare moment during October in Cape May when raptors are not in view and this concentration of birds should ensure that we almost always have something to look at. Learn how to tell buteos from accipiters, falcons from eagles, at the very edge of your eyesight or right overhead, and focus on tricky species-pairs, such as the many ways to tell Sharp-shinned from Cooper’s Hawks. We’ll visit areas around Cape May to make the most of your raptor watching on this “in the field” workshop. We’ll also be in a prime location to enjoy other migrants, such as shorebirds, late warblers, early sparrows, and more! Because of the inherent dynamic nature of birding, we do not pre-set an exact itinerary but will visit those parts of Cape May County that regularly hold good numbers of birds. Join CMBO naturalists for this 2-hour walk around the Rea Farm "Beanery" property! NJ Audubon has leased the birding privileges on this working farm where the field edges regularly attract warblers, sparrows, and other fall migrants. What is a Little Sit? A spin on the annual, international birding event The Big Sit, this event takes that idea and slows it down. Join the Nature Conservancy and the Cape May Bird Observatory staff for a fun, educational challenge to see how many birds we can identify from one location. In the fall, South Cape May Meadows is the perfect location to see migrating shorebirds, songbirds and raptors. As a part of this event, we will have benches for sitting, binoculars and spotting scopes for viewing, and educational materials to assist with bird identification. No matter your level of birding experience, you are welcome to help us add to our morning species total!! An ASL interpreter will be provided for this event. One of the gems of the state park system, Island Beach has miles of beach, tidal wetlands, maritime forest and thickets that can host a good diversity of birds, especially if the winds are right. There is a $5 entry fee for NJ residents who do not have a state park pass or are 65 years of age or older. Be prepared for several hours of walking on flat terrain, sometimes sandy. Bring lunch. Join Captain Bob and the crew of The Osprey for close-up looks at secretive rails, nesting Ospreys, migrant shorebirds, terns, gulls, herons and more. We explore the coastal saltmarsh of Cape May from Cape Island Creek to the Wildwoods and view the natural wonders of historic Cape May Harbor. The Osprey is a 37' pontoon boat that has a comfortable enclosed cabin with large viewing windows, a front deck with a railing, and a restroom on board. Non-motorized wheelchair accessible. The migration of scoters and other sea ducks, loons, cormorants and gannets can be an overwhelming sight. For example, the CMBO full-time Avalon Seawatch project sighted over one million seabirds here in 2014!
