Watch for Northern Harriers, Short-eared Owls, Great Horned Owls, and winter songbirds. We may walk up to 1.5 miles, over generally level, sometimes muddy or sandy terrain. Experience Open Air / Open Space, a juried art exhibit celebrating Somerset County's Open Space Preservation Program, featured in the Wayrick Art Gallery on the 2nd floor of the Scherman Hoffman Nature Center from February 6 through March 25. This special exhibition showcases the unique beauty of Somerset County's extensive public park system through the perspectives of both professional and novice New Jersey Plein Air artists. Sponsored by the Somerset County Board of County Commissioners, Somerset County Park Commission, Somerset County Open Space Preservation Program, and Somerset County Cultural & Heritage Commission, the exhibit honors the county's long-standing commitment to preserving land for conservation, passive use, and active recreation. Woodcock return to Franklin Township in late winter or early spring to mate and nest. Join CMBO naturalists for 2 hours of birding around beautiful Cape May Point! The “shoulder season” in Cape May is a wonderful time for birding and there’s no better place to do it than the Cape May Point State Park. With its diversity of habitat – beach, dunes, ponds, forest, and marsh – it’s the perfect spot for migrating waterfowl, songbirds and shorebirds to stop and refuel as the push of spring migration begins. We’ll travel the trails, check out CMBO’s Northwood Center and other surrounding hotspots on The Point, as we soak up the wonder of this annual phenomenon of Nature. These reservoirs can host lots of geese, ducks, and gulls. We'll also search nearby uplands for field and forest birds. These reservoirs are known for a variety of wintering waterfowl and up to 7 species of gulls, including some of the highest counts of Lesser Black-backed Gulls in North America. We’ll also bird the surrounding parks’ upland habitats for other wintering species like raptors and songbirds. Expect to walk 3-4 miles on well-defined trails and paths. Led by Alan Mart. Join area writer, birder, and conservation advocate Kelly Ball to craft a life-sized bird sculpture from upcycled cloth and become part of a crowdsourced art project. Each handcrafted bird commemorates a real bird that lost its life after hitting glass. Your bird will become part of a 300-ft art project that will travel the U.S. to educate the public about bird-window collisions and you'll be part of the searchable database of people that contributed. We'll also learn how to prevent bird-window collisions - especially important during spring migration! Note: This is a family-friendly program. Adults must accompany children. Description: Join CMBO Program Coordinator, Adehl Schwaderer, and Volunteer Naturalists for 1.5 to 2 hours of birding around beautiful Cape May Point! With spring approaching, most of the winter waterfowl will be departing soon, so come along to track them down before it’s too late! During this program, we will be scouring the Cape May Point State Park to see what avian winter visitors and early spring migrants are calling Cape May Point their home. There’s something about the peculiar, crepuscular ‘peeent’ of a woodcock that captures the imagination. It’s such a distinctive sound of spring, yet many people hear it and never find out what it is! This program begins with an indoor session at The Sperlak Gallery & Sculpture Garden, a working farm, studio, and nature sanctuary of artist Stan Sperlak. The indoor presentation will be delivered by Tom Reed, CMBO’s Migration Monitoring Coordinator, and will focus on the life of the American Woodcock in Cape May County. Following the presentation, everyone will be invited to enjoy a spread of hors d’oeuvres and local wine, before heading outside with Tom to try to spot this enigmatic bird. The “shoulder season” in Cape May is a wonderful time for birding and there’s no better place to do it than the Cape May Point State Park. The inlets and ponds in this area can be great for a variety of waterbirds including ducks, loons, gulls and some spring migrants. The "north shore" between Point Pleasant Beach and Belmar can make for great winter birding. We'll search the inlets, ponds, and oceanfront for a variety of ducks, loons, gulls, and more. In some years Razorbills or other rarer alcids may be present, and the tour can be good for "white-winged" gulls. Meet at the east end of Broadway in Point Pleasant Beach. Bring binoculars, spotting scope if you have one, and lunch. Dress warmly. This trip requires little walking. Led by Scott Barnes and Carole Hughes. In addition to reviewing equipment selection and use, the topics of time of day, weather, composition and light will be covered. Led by Randy Little, Associate Naturalist For beginners and those with some experience, this birding-by-ear series will improve your bird identification skills. More often than not, birds are heard before they are seen (if seen at all!) Learning their songs will add another dimension to your birdwatching. Randy Little is a former NJA board member and long-time NJA volunteer. Randy learned birding as a youngster under the wings of the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology’s founders and is a master at recording bird songs for the Cornell Lab. This series will begin Sunday March 15 and continue Sunday afternoons until April 26; there will be no class April 5. March 15 & 22 classes will cover the winter resident birds, March 29 & April 12 classes will cover the early migrant birds, and April 19 & 26 classes will cover the summer resident birds. Join Kevin Karlson to learn the easy way to separate the four common winter gulls and practice sifting flocks of gulls for something rare. Gulls are an interesting lot; as a group they can be found on every continent around the world, yet there is a tendency for them to be, well, a little ‘samey’! In this workshop, we aim to spend time focusing on the four regular, wintering species in Cape May - Herring, Great Black-backed, Ring-billed and Bonaparte’s; in the process, we will practice “sifting flocks” for rarer gulls. Perhaps we’ll see an Iceland Gull or other unusual species, or perhaps the season’s first Laughing Gull will wend its way northward past us. As well as considering identification, we’ll also help to demystify the fancy terminology surrounding age, plumage and condition of molt, useful considerations when working through a seemingly bewildering group. There will be a1-hr indoor session before the group heads out into the field. We don’t pre-set an itinerary but will explore those parts of Cape May County that regularly hold good numbers of gulls, such as Cape May Point, Cape May Harbor and the Cape May Ferry Terminal area. Led by Randy Little, Associate Naturalist For beginners and those with some experience, this birding-by-ear series will improve your bird identification skills. More often than not, birds are heard before they are seen (if seen at all!) Learning their songs will add another dimension to your birdwatching. Randy Little is a former NJA board member and long-time NJA volunteer. Randy learned birding as a youngster under the wings of the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology’s founders and is a master at recording bird songs for the Cornell Lab. Raritan Bay Waterfront Park has long been known as a concentration point for Bonaparte's Gulls in spring. If we're lucky a Little Gull or Black-headed Gull could be among them. The bay usually hosts a variety of waterbirds in early spring and some landbird migrants could be around. Once you enter the park, go north and park at the end of the lot close to the bay. During our Rainbow Roundup Nature Walk, we will take a gentle stroll around the Nature Center of Cape May trails in search of all the colors of spring. Randy learned birding as a youngster under the wings of the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology’s founders and is a master at recording bird songs for the Cornell Lab. This series will begin Sunday March 15 and continue Sunday afternoons until April 26; there will be no class April 5. March 15 & 22 classes will cover the winter resident birds, March 29 & April 12 classes will cover the early migrant birds, and April 19 & 26 classes will cover the summer resident birds. Registration and fee are per class. You must pre-register for each class you wish to attend. Ticket sale for each class ends at 4:00 PM on the day before each class. Early spring birding for loons, grebes, gulls, & migrants. If winds are right, we could have a modest hawk flight. Raritan Bay Waterfront Park has long been known as a concentration point for Bonaparte's Gulls in spring. If we're lucky a Little Gull or Black-headed Gull could be among them. The bay usually hosts a variety of waterbirds in early spring and some landbird migrants could be around. Once you enter the park, go north and park at the end of the lot close to the bay. Be prepared for easy walking for 3 hours. Restrooms on site. Led by Scott Barnes and Hank Burk. Join CMBO naturalists for 2 hours of birding around beautiful Cape May Point! The “shoulder season” in Cape May is a wonderful time for birding and there’s no better place to do it than the Cape May Point State Park. With its diversity of habitat – beach, dunes, ponds, forest, and marsh – it’s the perfect spot for migrating waterfowl, songbirds and shorebirds to stop and refuel as the push of spring migration begins. We’ll travel the trails, check out CMBO’s Northwood Center and other surrounding hotspots on The Point, as we soak up the wonder of this annual phenomenon of Nature.
