We explore the coastal saltmarsh of Cape May from Cape Island Creek to the Wildwoods and view the natural wonders of historic Cape May Harbor. The Osprey is a 37' pontoon boat that has a comfortable enclosed cabin with large viewing windows, a front deck with a railing, and a restroom on board. Non-motorized wheelchair accessible. The Scherman Hoffman Wildlife Sanctuary will present “Low Tide”, from Sunday, September 22 through Sunday, November 10 at its Wayrick Gallery at 11 Hardscrabble Road in Bernardsville. “Low Tide”, by Jorge Louis Monteagudo, features wildlife photographs taken in the New Jersey Meadowlands where he grew up. Most of the images in the exhibit were taken at or near low tide when the birds typically come out to feed. “Low Tide” is a culmination of Jorge’s many outings to the Meadowlands, and it continues to evolve. Jorge’s work is dedicated to those who fight to protect our natural resources; for without them, none of it would be possible. Admission to “Low Tide” is free and open to the public Wednesday - Sunday. Prints of the exhibition are available for purchase. Thirty percent of proceeds will be donated to the NJ Audubon. The public is invited to meet Jorge Louis Monteagudo at a free opening reception on September 22 from 2 to 4 pm. Light refreshments will be served. SCHEDULE: 9/26/24: The Nature Center of Cape May’s first guest this fall, will be Carla Dove, Program Manager of the “Feather Identification Laboratory”, Smithsonian’s Division of Birds at the National Museum of Natural History. None of us will ever forget the “Miracle on the Hudson,” that occurred on January, 5th, 2009, when USAir flight 1549 flew through a flock of birds upon take off from JFK Airport in New York, ingesting several that resulted in a loss of both engines. The miracle that followed was when Captain Sully Sullenberger managed to make a controlled water landing on the Hudson River that resulted in zero (0) fatalities. Any/every pilot will tell you that birds and aircraft simply don’t mix, and bird strikes in the aviation world continue to exist. This is a rare opportunity to hear an expert on this subject. “Harborside Chats,” are always popular, and preregistration for Ms. Dove’s presentation will be required. 10/3/24: Mark Garland of NJ Audubon's Monarch Monitoring Project will share their research methods, recent findings, and conduct a butterfly tagging demonstration. This program will be OFFSITE, at Harborview Park. 10/10/24: Jessica York: From the Delaware to the Hudson, Jessica will share this season’s voyages of the A.J. Meerwald. She’ll also detail some of exciting new exhibits that are coming to the Bayshore Center. 10/17/24: Lisa Calvo will present, “Back from the Brink.” This is the remarkable story of how Delaware Bay oysters have staged a comeback and are once again a staple on menus around the world. This presentation will include a shucking demonstration and raw-oyster tasting for those who wish to partake. Pre-registration is a must for this “Chat.” 10/24/24: Bill Boyle, avid birder, will share tales of his adventures around the world. Join CMBO Director Brett Ewald and CMBO Naturalists for this workshop. Bird the “raptor capital of North America” at the peak of diversity. Bird the “raptor capital of North America” at the peak of diversity, when falcons are zipping along the dunes, accipiters are flap, flap, flapping by, buteos are soaring overhead, and eagles are chasing Ospreys. Early October often produces flights in the thousands and is the peak time for Peregrine Falcons and others. It is a rare moment during October in Cape May when raptors are not in view and this concentration of birds should ensure that we almost always have something to look at. Learn how to tell buteos from accipiters, falcons from eagles, at the very edge of your eyesight or right overhead, and focus on tricky species-pairs, such as the many ways to tell Sharp-shinned from Cooper’s Hawks. We’ll visit areas around Cape May to make the most of your raptor watching on this “in the field” workshop. We’ll also be in a prime location to enjoy other migrants, such as shorebirds, late warblers, early sparrows, and more! Because of the inherent dynamic nature of birding, we do not pre-set an exact itinerary but will visit those parts of Cape May County that regularly hold good numbers of birds. A focused field trip watching migratory raptors and other birds and learning about how we count them at the hawk watch. This trip is open to young birders plus parent/guardian only and designed to teach young birders about the nature of a migration count, where observers conduct an organized count of migratory birds passing by a particular point. We’ll learn about raptor identification, estimating numbers of birds, the weather conditions that favor the passage of many bird species, tips on picking up distant flocks of hawks and other migrants, and more. Time permitting, we may do some birding along the state park trails or other nearby locations. Join Captain Bob and the crew of The Osprey for close-up looks at secretive rails, nesting Ospreys, migrant shorebirds, terns, gulls, herons and more. We explore the coastal saltmarsh of Cape May from Cape Island Creek to the Wildwoods and view the natural wonders of historic Cape May Harbor. The Osprey is a 37' pontoon boat that has a comfortable enclosed cabin with large viewing windows, a front deck with a railing, and a restroom on board. Non-motorized wheelchair accessible. None of us will ever forget the “Miracle on the Hudson,” that occurred on January, 5th, 2009, when USAir flight 1549 flew through a flock of birds upon take off from JFK Airport in New York, ingesting several that resulted in a loss of both engines. The miracle that followed was when Captain Sully Sullenberger managed to make a controlled water landing on the Hudson River that resulted in zero (0) fatalities. Any/every pilot will tell you that birds and aircraft simply don’t mix, and bird strikes in the aviation world continue to exist. This is a rare opportunity to hear an expert on this subject. “Harborside Chats,” are always popular, and preregistration for Ms. Dove’s presentation will be required. 10/3/24: Mark Garland of NJ Audubon's Monarch Monitoring Project will share their research methods, recent findings, and conduct a butterfly tagging demonstration. Marvel at the spectacular views of Broad-winged Hawk kettles as they fly over the sanctuary, Bald Eagles, and other raptors. Join CMBO Director Brett Ewald and CMBO Naturalists for this workshop. Bird the “raptor capital of North America” at the peak of diversity. Bird the “raptor capital of North America” at the peak of diversity, when falcons are zipping along the dunes, accipiters are flap, flap, flapping by, buteos are soaring overhead, and eagles are chasing Ospreys. Early October often produces flights in the thousands and is the peak time for Peregrine Falcons and others. It is a rare moment during October in Cape May when raptors are not in view and this concentration of birds should ensure that we almost always have something to look at. Learn how to tell buteos from accipiters, falcons from eagles, at the very edge of your eyesight or right overhead, and focus on tricky species-pairs, such as the many ways to tell Sharp-shinned from Cooper’s Hawks. We’ll visit areas around Cape May to make the most of your raptor watching on this “in the field” workshop. We’ll also be in a prime location to enjoy other migrants, such as shorebirds, late warblers, early sparrows, and more! Because of the inherent dynamic nature of birding, we do not pre-set an exact itinerary but will visit those parts of Cape May County that regularly hold good numbers of birds. Join our Naturalist on the observation deck for a bird’s eye view of fall migration. We'll be looking for migrating raptors and any passerines passing through. Marvel at the spectacular views of Broad-winged Hawk kettles as they fly over the sanctuary, Bald Eagles, and other raptors. Hawk Watches are scheduled for Fridays, September13, 20, 27, October 11, 25, and November 1 from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Loaner binoculars will be available. Note: a hawk watch day will be cancelled if there is rain, snow, or weather warnings. Registration and fee are per date. You must pre-register for each date you wish to attend. None of us will ever forget the “Miracle on the Hudson,” that occurred on January, 5th, 2009, when USAir flight 1549 flew through a flock of birds upon take off from JFK Airport in New York, ingesting several that resulted in a loss of both engines. The miracle that followed was when Captain Sully Sullenberger managed to make a controlled water landing on the Hudson River that resulted in zero (0) fatalities. Any/every pilot will tell you that birds and aircraft simply don’t mix, and bird strikes in the aviation world continue to exist. This is a rare opportunity to hear an expert on this subject. “Harborside Chats,” are always popular, and preregistration for Ms. Dove’s presentation will be required. 10/3/24: Mark Garland of NJ Audubon's Monarch Monitoring Project will share their research methods, recent findings, and conduct a butterfly tagging demonstration. This program will be OFFSITE, at Harborview Park. 10/10/24: Jessica York: From the Delaware to the Hudson, Jessica will share this season’s voyages of the A.J. Meerwald. Join our Naturalist on the observation deck for a bird’s eye view of fall migration. We'll be looking for migrating raptors and any passerines passing through. Marvel at the spectacular views of Broad-winged Hawk kettles as they fly over the sanctuary, Bald Eagles, and other raptors. Join Louise Zemaitis for this three-day birding workshop exploring Cape May during the best time of year for massive bird fallouts! This is the time at Cape May that the local birders wait for; visiting crowds of keen birders have diminished, yet the most massive bird fallouts of the season commonly occur NOW! Flocks of sparrows, kinglets, bluebirds, American Robins and Hermit Thrushes throng the trees and meadows - and it is now that knowledgeable birders start to sift through the birds in the hope of something really special, since this week starts the season for vagrants in Cape May. It’s also a great time for big raptors like buteos and Golden Eagles, while large seabird flights pass Avalon and Cape May Point nearly every day. Most of the three days will be spent outdoors, learning directly from our field experiences and much of our time will most likely be spent at some of Cape May’s key migration locations. We don’t pre-set an itinerary but will visit those parts of Cape May County that regularly hold good numbers of birds at this time of year. None of us will ever forget the “Miracle on the Hudson,” that occurred on January, 5th, 2009, when USAir flight 1549 flew through a flock of birds upon take off from JFK Airport in New York, ingesting several that resulted in a loss of both engines. The miracle that followed was when Captain Sully Sullenberger managed to make a controlled water landing on the Hudson River that resulted in zero (0) fatalities. Any/every pilot will tell you that birds and aircraft simply don’t mix, and bird strikes in the aviation world continue to exist. This is a rare opportunity to hear an expert on this subject. “Harborside Chats,” are always popular, and preregistration for Ms. Dove’s presentation will be required. 10/3/24: Mark Garland of NJ Audubon's Monarch Monitoring Project will share their research methods, recent findings, and conduct a butterfly tagging demonstration. We welcome the next generation of naturalists to Lorrimer Sanctuary for our after-school nature club! Designed to be a continuation from our Tiny Tots program, we will read books, explore outside, make nature-themed crafts, and learn about the environment in age-appropriate ways. None of us will ever forget the “Miracle on the Hudson,” that occurred on January, 5th, 2009, when USAir flight 1549 flew through a flock of birds upon take off from JFK Airport in New York, ingesting several that resulted in a loss of both engines. The miracle that followed was when Captain Sully Sullenberger managed to make a controlled water landing on the Hudson River that resulted in zero (0) fatalities. Any/every pilot will tell you that birds and aircraft simply don’t mix, and bird strikes in the aviation world continue to exist. This is a rare opportunity to hear an expert on this subject. “Harborside Chats,” are always popular, and preregistration for Ms. Dove’s presentation will be required. 10/3/24: Mark Garland of NJ Audubon's Monarch Monitoring Project will share their research methods, recent findings, and conduct a butterfly tagging demonstration. The Scherman Hoffman Wildlife Sanctuary will present “Low Tide”, from Sunday, September 22 through Sunday, November 10 at its Wayrick Gallery at 11 Hardscrabble Road in Bernardsville. “Low Tide”, by Jorge Louis Monteagudo, features wildlife photographs taken in the New Jersey Meadowlands where he grew up. Most of the images in the exhibit were taken at or near low tide when the birds typically come out to feed. “Low Tide” is a culmination of Jorge’s many outings to the Meadowlands, and it continues to evolve. Jorge’s work is dedicated to those who fight to protect our natural resources; for without them, none of it would be possible. Admission to “Low Tide” is free and open to the public Wednesday - Sunday. Prints of the exhibition are available for purchase. Thirty percent of proceeds will be donated to the NJ Audubon. The public is invited to meet Jorge Louis Monteagudo at a free opening reception on September 22 from 2 to 4 pm. Light refreshments will be served. Listen to the haunting words of Edgar Allan Poe's classic poem, "The Raven," as you roast marshmallows drink hot chocolate and enjoy the crisp autumn air. Don't miss out on this unique storytelling experience under the stars! Dave Pasake, retired Elementary School teacher, will read The Raven, a classic poem by Edgar Allan Poe about a man's grief and despair after the death of his lover Lenore. The poem features a mysterious raven that repeats the word "nevermore". Dave will discuss the American writer and poet, Edgar Allen Poe, as well as the Common Raven, a bird that is found year-round in North America, Europe and Asia. This program is suitable for families, adults and children alike. The Raven will be read outdoors around a fire pit. Hot chocolate will be served. Dress appropriately for the cooler night-time temperatures. The reading will take place indoors, in case of rain. Come enjoy the changing of the seasons. The Fall migration of seabirds along the South Jersey coast is fascinating, inspiring, and sometimes overwhelming, as hundreds of thousands head south to wintering grounds. Join us for an afternoon of scoters, gannets, loons, grebes, cormorants, jaegers, and more – a chance to learn about and appreciate these amazing movements. We’ll discuss plumage, flight style, seasonality and other aspects that affect migration. We’ll concentrate our efforts around Stone Harbor and Avalon – taking it all in. Because of the inherent dynamic nature of birding, we do not pre-set an exact itinerary but will visit those parts of Cape May County that regularly hold good numbers of seabirds during November. The Osprey is a 37' pontoon boat that has a comfortable enclosed cabin with large viewing windows, a front deck with a railing, and a restroom on board. Non-motorized wheelchair accessible. Join CMBO naturalists for this 2-hour walk around the Cape May Point State Park! The afternoon hawk flight is often strong, with late day movements of falcons. The weather in Cape May can differ considerably from nearby inland areas and may be warmer, colder, or windier so it’s best to be over prepared. We may have to bird in the rain, so please bring your rain gear. TRANSPORTATION: We may walk up to 1.5 miles, over generally level, sometimes muddy or sandy terrain. Some trips involve walks over jetties. CANCELLATION: NJ Audubon’s CMBO programs are virtually never cancelled. If we cancel, due to lack of participation, severe weather, or unforeseen circumstances, all participants will be notified as soon as possible and are eligible for a full refund. Participants may cancel without penalty if greater than 48 hours in advance. The migration of scoters and other sea ducks, loons, cormorants and gannets can be an overwhelming sight. For example, the CMBO full-time Avalon Seawatch project sighted over one million seabirds here in 2014! Join CMBO interpretive naturalists for this outdoor workshop to witness and learn about this migration spectacle.
